Curavar appeared to be just another wizard. He seemed to be offering incentives to the party to if they went out and adventured. Perhaps he saw some potential in this party. As the story progressed, it became clear that Curavar is much older than he appears, and also seems to have a past with Lord Dragdurach. That past has yet to be revealed.
