Bio

Baer’s father was beheaded for impregnating the handmaiden of a Templar’s wife. Not wanting to destroy the life of an innocent child, the Templar instead sold both mother and unborn child into the service of a gladiator arena owner in Draj. For several months, Baer’s mother served as cook and general servant to the owners of the Arena. In the month before the birth, she became very close to one of the gladiators by the name of Samm. The two promised each other that they would one day leave Draj behind and live for themselves.

Baer’s birth proved to be more complicated than anticipated. His mother died shortly after Baer was born. The arena owner’s wife took pity on the child, having no children of her own, and raised the child until he turned ten. He was then put to work as a servant in the arena. The gladiators of course treated him rough and if it weren’t for Samm he might have come to serious harm.

Samm showed Baer the ropes and toughened the boy up so he could take care of himself. Baer proved to be an apt student of martial technique, learning and training whenever he could. This of course only sparked more taunts and persecution from the arena gladiators.

When he turned 16, Baer began to train legitimately in the arena, going up against the gladiators who for so many years abused and belittled him. It took time, but slowly the insults stopped being truly malicious and soon became good natured barbs between fellow fighters.

A couple years later, Samm and Baer were set to fight side by side against several other foes in the arena. The fight proved more taxing than Samm could handle and, completely exhausted, he let his guard down for only a second, and Baer was too slow to cover him. Seizing the opportunity, one of their opponents came in and scored a devastating blow against Samm. With wild abandon, Baer rushed to Samm’s aid, finishing off their opponents and dealing a killing strike to Samm’s attacker. Baer then rushed to Samm’s side only to find that he was already dead. The opponent that Baer had so “unruly” killed happened to be the son of an outstanding Templar from the region…the same that had executed his father.

With some considerable persuading from the Templar, Baer spent the next five years in a prison, forgotten. Now he again fights in the arena, a battered man with little left to live for.
He fights to die another day.
