Ambitious and vain, Duke Carlo Emanuele (b. 1562), styled “the Great,” is a distant heir to the crowns of both France and Spain. Savoy occupys an important position in the struggle for control of northern Italy, and the duke knows this, playing alliances with France, Spain, England, and the Holy Roman Empire against one another. He is unpredictable, save that he will pursue whatever strategy offers him the best opportunity to further his dynastic ambitions.
