Chief minister to King Phillip IV of Spain
Olivares (b. 1587) was born in Italy, the son of a Spanish ambassador. Through the offices of his uncle, Olivares was placed in the household of the young Prince Phillip, and today he serves the Spanish king as valido (favorite and chief minister).
Olivares effectively runs the Spanish machinery of state on behalf of Phillip IV, a fact which rankles many of the grandees of the court.
Olivares is a knight of the Order of Calatrava.
