Bio
Gentileschi (b. 1569) began his career in Rome in the 1570s and 1580s, working in the studio of the landscape painter Agostino Tassi. He would later come under the influence of Caravaggio, and shared in a number of the latter artist;s misadventures in Rome. By 1620, Gentileschi left Rome for Genoa, then travelled to Paris where he serves as Marie de Medici ’s court painter.
Gentileschi’s daughter, Artemisia, is also an accomplished artist, starting in her father’s studio when none of the academies in Iraly would accept a woman. Artemisia apprenticed with Tassi as well, but the artist raped her and both father and daughter succeeded in having him convicted for the crime.
