Consort and favorite concubine of Sultan Ahmed, Kösem (ba. 1589) became valide sultan, or queen mother, of the Ottoman Empire when her young son Murad succeeded Mustafa the Mad in 1623. She rules the empire as regent during Murad’s minority.
It is said that she is of Greek ancestry, and was once known as Anastasia.
