Mother of Grand Duke Ferdinando
The daughter of the Archduke of Inner Austria, Maria Maddalena (b. 1589) married Cosimo de’ Medici in 1608, becoming Granducessa di Toscana for the remaineder of his reign. Togehther Cosimo and Maria Maddalena raised eight children before his death in 1621. Her son Ferdinando, heir to the title of Grand Duke, was just ten years old, so Maria Maddalena and her mother-in-law, Cristina of Lorraine, share a joint regency of the grand duchy, a fief of the Holy Roman Empire, until the young man comes of age.
Queen Anne d’Autriche of France is Maria Maddalena’s neice by way of Margaret of Austria, Anne’s mother and Maria Maddalena’s sister.
