De Marillac (b. 1563) is a career civil servant, recognized as one of the most brilliant thinkers in France, a man dedicated to the service of the king and the kingdom. He is a member of the conservative Catholic dévot faction at court and a ally of the Queen Mother and works closely with Cardinal Richelieu.
