Woman in Black Encounter Long was not always the talented card sharp he his today. Why back in his early days of grifting he pulled a downright amateur move, winning too many hands in a row with straight flushes on a creole river boat. The men he gamed with didn’t care too much for losing their money and were about to take his cash and give him a unhealthy helping of lead in return. A whore in a black bustier, overly painted face, and a heavy French accent intervened and talked the men into getting a drink while she had a conversation with Long. The whore insulted his con and advised that he give the money back. She then threw down a worn copy of Hoyle’s Book of Games and told him to learn the game and that “a man with a strong enough soul could find more.” Long took the book and gave back the money. He tried to find the whore later be she seemed to have disappeared from the boat.
