Armen was born the bastard son of Lord Garrot Dayne and a household servant named Allyria. Despite the minor scandal, and against the wishes of Lady Cassella Dayne, Allyria and her son Armen were tolerated at Starfall; though largely ignored by the family, with the exception of Armen’s relationship with his half brother Mallor Dayne. Allyria kept her job working in the kitchen. As Armen grew, work was found for him in the castle, usually in the kennel. He would often run away from his responsibilities to watch combat practice in the yard, for which he was usually punished harshly by the kennel master; sometimes having the dogs put on him. As Armen grew older, he discovered he had a natural aptitude for combat, getting into frequent rows with other servants. Rather than being punished for this, he was given a position in the garrison, where he excelled.
Although his skill in arms was acknowledged, he was never given the opportunity to squire for any of the household knights. Despite this, he rose as high as he could in the household guard, becoming the 3rd in command by the time he was an 18
His relationship with his half brother Mallor was always strained. Mallor, Armen’s senior by 3 years, developed a mean streak in his youth, and Armen proved to be an easy target for Mallor’s cruelty. Armen fought back the first time he was attacked, leaving Mallor with a prominent scar across the bridge of his nose. For this, Armen was punished with a public beating. The situation became substantially worse though shortly after his ascension to 3rd in command of the household guard. A tournament was held at Starfall, which Armen entered as a mystery knight in the melee, carrying the day and defeating his brother Mallor. The purse was begrudgingly granted to him by Lord Garrot Dayne, much to the protest and anger of Mallor. It was not long after that Lord Garrot passed away in his sleep under slightly suspicious circumstances. Armen made a public accusation against Mallor, though the case never made it before the Martells. Instead of remaining, potentially in danger, he secretly fled to Planky Town, finding work upon a ship bound for Tyrosh.
In spite of the language gap, he quickly found work as a mercenary for the Tyroshi. For the next ten years, Armen served as a Mercenary of flexible loyalty, serving Tyrosh, Myr, and Lys in turn; gaining a name for himself as an expert swordsman. He embraced the name “Cleaver” bestowed on him by his fellow Mercenaries. Also, during this period he lost an eye in a brawl with a drunken Braavosi and his hound. His reputation as a vicious and effective fighter grew, particularly his fondness for great swords. During this period, his half brother Mallor declared himself The Sword of the Morning, giving himself right to use the ancestral blade Dawn. Armen did not react well to this.
His life changed shortly after a campaign fighting for Lys. He met a woman named Ariane, a successful burglar in Lys. She hired him to protect her from her enemies and see her safely from the city. After a whirlwind romance and marriage, they uprooted and moved to Pentos. Armen looked for more stable work, but his reputation as a fighter preceded him, and he soon found himself working as a mercenary again, this time as a body guard and sell sword for the wealthy. He soon secured a position as a sell sword for _____, a magister and powerful figure in the exchange. He quickly rose in the household, becoming the head of his guard, as well as an enforcer.
