Bio
Cornelius Hovarth Grimstead was born to poor parents in the working class housing modules of Glisten’s Pluvis Belt on 267/1067. His parents, particularly his father, were ardent Trade Unionsts. Grim’s father, Edward, was arrested many times for protesting the working conditions in the belt, and this became a constant source of embarrassment for young Grim. In response, he bagen to argue with his father, and, when he reached 16, he joined the Sons of the Imperium, a right wing social club that pledged allegiance to the Emperor above all else. Grim soon found their doctrine and tactics too severe for his tastes, but he never renounced his membership. As for relations with his father, the last time they saw each other, as Grim was preparing to go to the IISS base to enlist, neither one said a word…
From a young age Cornelius exhibited a remarkable degree of both physical and mental agility. Upon turning 18, he enlisted at the Glisten IISS base, and, seeking the ultimate thrill of discovery, asked for “First Contact” as his primary assignment. Following basic training in Linguistics, Piloting, and Survival, his first term went well, with Cornelius being promoted and gaining training in both Power Plant Engineering and Cybernetics. Then, during an assignment to investigate a new race of cyborgs in his second term, Cornelius mistranslated a key treaty proposal, leading to a major diplomatic incident, and, ultimately, his dismissal from the IISS. During this period, mostly due to the stress of the lengthy official inquiry, Cornelius’s health declined somewhat.
So, at the age of 26, he found himself again looking for a career. He tried the Merchants, but to no avail. Desperate, he found work in the Glisten contingent of the Imperial Army, which seemed glad to draft an umemployed young man with such raw talent. Put to work in the “Support Services”, Cornelius was trained in a variety of disciplines, including Comms, Navigation, and Sensors. None of these assignments stuck, however, but he soon rediscovered his first passion: Engineering. His experience included training on Life Support systems (for troops in hostile environments) and in Electrical Engineering (he assisted in the installation of Fire Control computer systems for a major base). Extensive training by the Army during the next few years also saw Cornelius achieve proficiency with Heavy Weapons and in Reconnaissance. His skill as a Leader also improved, when, during a surprise attack on his base in which the regular troops were routed, Cornelius mustered his engineers to defend the key power plant long enough for the infantry to regroup and counterattack. His efforts were never officially recognized, but his commanding officer, Major Thelonius Garber, awarded him an engraved Gauss Rifle, purchased by the men of his unit, as a badge of honor. (see “for the Imperium!”)
It was during his first term in the Army that Cornelius acquired the nickname that would stick with him the rest of his career: Grim. Beverly Meyers, Seargent Meyers to her platoon of Imperial Marines, was a beautiful redhead of stunning proportions, with a wit to match, when Cornelius met her during a joint forces operation in 1095. In a brief span, a few months at most, the heretofore jovial Cornelius found he had fallen head over heels in love. But, when Beverly was mortally wounded in an assault on a rebel base in the sector, Cornelius’ smile was rarely seen again…Now he suspects his friend Jie, an ex Marine, might know something about Beverly’s death.
This chapter of Grim’s life came to a close on 283/1106, on Tarkine, when Grim put a bullet in the head of “Major” James Osgoode, the man who murdered Beverly and who also happened to be Jie’s ex lover. Grim is no longer quite so glum, and on he goes, out into the stars, maybe to find love again. If not, Autumn’s pretty hot…(damn, Arvor called “dibs”).
