Not much to say really..
I grew up on a farm out on the borderlands. There was a small keep that was established to help protect us simple folk from various humanoid tribes that lived in the region that local bards called the "Caves of Chaos" but was severely under funded and usually had problems protecting its own walls from bandits. In order to handle the humanoid threat, the sheriff enlisted the aid of adventurers who happened to be traveling through. Every month, the sheriff would disguise a few of his guards as local toughs in order to pick fights with any new travelers at the local pub. Then, depending on the outcome, the sheriff would either ask for their help as local heroes, pay them as mercenaries or blackmail them with prison to clear out the caves of humanoids. Usually, the promise to keep what they find was enough payment and the cost to the keep was minimal.
Anyways, when I was younger, just getting my beard, I was captured by a group of hobgoblins while tending my father's sheep and brought to the "Caves of Chaos". I was thrown into a slave room with a few other country folk where we were responsible to mine ore. Eventually, a group of adventurers hired by the keep found us and freed us all. Unfortunately, they were too busy to take us to the dungeon exit and many of us died trying to find away out. Fortunately, I found a shield and a sword along the way and was able to protect myself from a lone stirge. When I finally got back to the keep, the sheriff drafted me into the local patrol mainly because I was already armed. Thus began my career as a guard.
