POWER DESCRIPTIONS
DIVINE CHALLENGE                     Paladin Feature
At-Will      *      Divine      Minor Action          Close burst 5
Target: One creature in burst
Effect: You mark the target. The target remains marked until you use the power against another target or if you fail to engage the target. A creature can be subject to only one mark at a time. A new mark supersedes a mark that was already in place.
While a target is marked it takes a – 2 penalty to attack rolls for any attack that doesn’t include you as a target. Also it takes cold damage equal to 3 + CHA (+ 4) modifier the first time it makes an attack that doesn’t include you as a target before the start of your next turn. The damage increases to 6 + CHA at 11th level and to 9 + CHA at 21st level.
On your turn you must engage the target you challenged or challenge a different target. To engage the target you must either attack it or end your turn adjacent to it. If none of these events occur by the end of your turn the marked condition ends and you can’t use divine challenge on your next turn.
You can use Divine Challenge once per turn.
Special:Even though this ability is called a challenge it doesn’t rely on the intelligence or language ability of the target. It’s a magical compulsion that affects the creature’s behavior regardless of the creature’s nature. You can’t place a divine challenge on a creature that is already affected by your or another character’s divine challenge.

Bio

  • Father was a priest of Pelor
  • Ambushed by orcs while returning from his wedding with his new bride
  • Left for dead – stabbed through the chest with a spear – while the bridal party was slaughtered (his family and friends) and his wife was carried off by the orcs
  • Believing he was dying and not wanting his wife Alia to suffer through a life of torture, abuse and pain, he prayed to the Raven Queen to release his bride from her fate and allow her to die so that they could be together…
  • He then was visited by a raven…crawling through the snow, he followed it
  • The bird led him to a clearing where he found his bride dead – slain along with the orcs who had taken her when their band had been ambushed in turn by some more powerful group…
  • The raven was the agent of the Queen and he learned that she had answered his prayer – saving his bride from her awful fate by granting her an untimely death – but was extracting a price in return – his servitude until his own death…which was not to be any time soon: She touched him with her power and through the Raven kept him alive through the cold winter
  • Dismayed…since all he wanted to do was die and be with his love…he became suicidal…but the beliefs drummed into him by his father made it impossible for him to take his own life…or perhaps it wasn’t his fate to do so…
  • He survived the rest of the winter in the wilds, subsisting on what little food he could find and what the raven, his constant companion brought to him…
  • Eventually he came to accept his fate and though he doesn’t like it, has become a grudging servant of the Queen – hoping always and still to join his love Alia when he dies…
  • He’s become stoic about life and fearless in battle since he is not afraid to die…and indeed welcomes it, although he has come to believe that the Queen has a fate for him other than a quick death…
  • Resigned to his fate, he has taken to praying for guidance and instruction with the black prayer beads he keeps wound around his left wrist…his prayers are occasionally answered by the raven…who continues to appear to him occasionally, usually when the Queen has a message or task for him…for example, when winter finally ended he followed the bird to Havenbrow where he has the feeling something important is about to begin…

He faded in and out of consciousness but was aware enough to hear the screams of his new bride, Alia as the monsters took her away. Doomed, he thought – to a lifetime of slavery, abuse, and torment. Despite his upbringing as a worshipper of Pelor his prayers now flew to the Raven Queen. Please, he begged, spare her from this fate…let her die with me…anything but this fate for her..my beloved…let us be together in death if not in life…a gust of cold wind took his breath away and he lost consciousness. When he awoke, the spear remained. Night had fallen and without the winter sun it had become bitterly cold. The numbness dulled the pain and he seemed to breath easier. In the moonlit snow beside him stood a raven. It cocked it’s head at him and with knowing eyes, nodded. Afraid for his eyes, he feebly tried to shoe it away. His attempts failed, but the bird moved now closer, regarding him quisically and continuing to nod at him. Slowly understanding dawned – it wanted him to follow. The numbness in his chest made movement slow, but he did his best. Folding himself into a sitting position, he leaned forward, grasping the broken spear sha ft with both hands. A solid push sent it the rest of the way through his chest. A gurgle of blood nearly choked him. Cold, he thought as he spit it out. I must be dead…he extracted the rest of the spear under the raven’s watchful gaze. Then fell back to rest a second. Morning sun was lighting the sky when he next awoke. He stared directly into the ravens dark eyes…it sat on his chest now. Again, he tried to shoe it away…and this time it hopped a short distance and stopped. Looking back it moved again…ah yes, he thought. I’m supposed to follow it…his legs were solid blocks of ice so the best he could manage was a slow crawl. This satisfied the bird though and it led him though the wilderness for most of the morning… Not by choice – left out in the cold when village destroyed by orcs… Returning home with bride after wedding, attacked and whole party slain by orc raiders – stole wedding gifts, etc. Ran off with new bride and women and tchildren, left him for dead with sword through his stomach…lying frozen in the snow… Watched as wife, children were dragged off by orcs to become slaves…prayed to the raven queen that they would be allowed to die rather than face the horrors of raping, pillaging, etc that lay before them…the queen granted his prayer…a raven appeared and led him crawling through the snow to where the orcs who’d taken his wife had been in turn ambushed by elves and their whole party killed. Including the human slaves/prisoners they had with them. The raven sat on his wife’s dead body, then continued to lead him through the blizzard, to a cave, where he lost consciousness…awakening days later, he was able to shelter in the cave for the rest of the winter, subsisting off of what little food he could scrounge up and what the raven – who appeared to him daily – brought for him… made pact with raven queen to get vengeance, did so but now wants to be free of it? Thought everyone he loved was dead (I. E. Bride), recently found out that she is still alive – revealed to him by raven queen. Used by raven to keep loyalty, is afraid to approach them, but wants to protect them…bride is a slave somewhere in moonsong city… Raven queen appears to him as a talking raven occasionally…other times he just gets feelings…about people, etc. She sent him on to haven – provides direction? What’s his cover? Day job? Brooding stranger? Does small jobs for locals – or did – to earn room and board (a guys gotta eat…) In haven, did some big favor for the innkeeper or someone and now lives there? Performs funeral rites for locals to pay his bills… Simply works as a farmer like everyone else…keeps to himself mostly…waiting for a sign from the Queen…
