Esalin’s Planetary Defense Force is a very small organization and the competition to join is intense, so only the very best applicants are able to join. Helmut LaPoutain was one of those who were accepted to join.

With the low law level on Esalin, it’s not often that the Planetary Defenses are called upon. As a result, all members have to be good all-rounders so that they can be used either to man the world’s SDBs or can be used on land in the role of SWAT teams to handle any jobs that are too challenging for the local police.

Exceptionally bright, Helmut was cross-trained in the support areas of the Defense Force, receiving extensive training as a medic and a commo operator, plus in the areas of combat engineering and gunnery. As with all members of the Defense Force, he can handle himself in a fight both with the standard issue SMGs and hand-to-hand, but he was too valuable to be put in the center of assault teams.

Helmut spent three terms in the Planetary Defense Forces, but has had enough now. Even with the wide range of tasks that the PDF are able to do, the relaxed atmosphere on Esalin means that they are very rarely called into action. Helmut also grew to resent his constantly being kept in the reserves because of his valuable training and longs to see a bit more of the ’Verse and a little more action than he has seen over the past decade.
