So what is it like in the 70’s

January 1, 1971

The chaotic events of the 60’s, including war and social change, seemed destined to continue in the 70’s. Major trends included a growing disillusionment of government, advances in civil rights, increased influence of the women’s movement, a heightened concern for the environment, and increased space exploration. Many of the “radical” ideas of the 60’s gained wider acceptance in the new decade, and were mainstreamed into American life and culture. -the beginning of that groovy decade-when self-love was touted and therapy was primal…when it was okay for men to cry and wives to swap. You were floating on your parent’s waterbed, and the 13-inch Zenith was tuned to one of three networks. While the floppy disk & the daisy-wheel printer were invented and technology of the first automatic teller machine & Intel creates the first microprocessor merged.
Things appeared cheaper but in reality wages were lower : Average salary: $7,564
Food prices: milk, 33 cents a qt.; bread, 24 cents a loaf; round steak, $1.30 a pound
The fashion influence of Sixties hippies was mainstreamed in the Seventies, as men sported shoulder length hair and non-traditional clothing became the rage, including bellbottom pants, hip huggers, colorful patches, hot pants, platform shoes, earth shoes, clogs, T-shirts, and gypsy dresses. Knits and denims were the fabrics of choice. Leisure suits for men became commonplace, and women were fashionable in everything from ankle-length grandmother dresses to hot pants and micro-miniskirts.

Sad to say that Americans were protesting everything and everywhere with ideas worth dying for. The 1970’s were a time of doing for America, Gays were in the closet, Blacks were fighting for rights, César Chávez was making a name for himself and his cause.

MASH hit close to home as it was sad to see the rawness of war in the box office, then there was Love Story the tearjerker movie was born and we fell for it—“love means never having to say you’re sorry”…huh? We cried and cried or laughed as Airport was flying high at having launched the disaster movie craze. So our parents turned to Lawrenence Welk Show, Mary Tyler Moore Show, Carol Burnett Some looked to Hee Haw, Beverly Hillbillies or Green Acres for the simple life. We Love, American Style or Laugh In….all the way from Beautiful Downtown Burbank. Primetime was left for the risky shows that asked … Where’s the strangest place you ever made whoopee? With the Newlyweds game, All in the Family, The Brady Bunch and Mod Squad. While for grade-schoolers, Sex Ed began with Judy Blume or Mad magazine but most kids still only cared for Weebles wobble but they don’t fall down! While wanting a Stretch Armstrong, Evel Knievel, Mouse Trap, or a Pet Rock. People asked, “How many licks did it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?”or “Scooby Doo Where Are You?” while most kids watched ?. Josie and the Pussycats, Mister Magoo, The Pink Panther, Top Cat, Hong Kong Phooey or listened to the Jackson 5 which ruled the top ten and Elvis Presley was becoming a king.
