Raised in a human family, Phaedra was the Volar family’s shame. Her mother, Alahandra Volar, was the most vocal about this, blaming her father, Phaedra’s grandfather, the mage Brandis Arnad for this, though how he was to blame was never explained and queries made to her mother were met with pursed lips and a change of subject. The Volar’s ran a “curio” shop in Xen’drik, which sold many things, many of them magical in nature.
Phaedra often spent time in the wilds near her home, more comfortable and accepted by the animals than her own family, save for her grandfather. One day she came home to find that the family had been murdered. Now more alone in the world than before, Phaedra booked passage to Khorvaire where she began a life of travel and adventure, finding friends along the way with whom to adventure.
Over time a Mark of Detection appeared on her arm, making her a further outcast than before. Opening a locket around her neck changed her life as Phaedra suddenly changed into a half elf. She met with the head of House Medani who told her he was her uncle, that she was the rightful heir to the house and he was acting in stewardship. She never was a Tiefling, he told her, but was hidden as such for her safety. He provided her with new papers, but told her she must keep her true identity as Drayel d’Mendani a secret for her safety.
Since leaving House Medani, though, Phaedra and her group have been beset by attacks of those wanting her dead. One in the most recent group had a letter from Phaedra’s uncle stating that they were to keep her from harm. But why would they be attacking, and calling her the false heir if they were sent to protect? Is her uncle trustworthy, Phaedra wonders? Is there anyone she can really trust aside from her small group of adventurers?
