The world you know is not real but merely a pale shadow of reality. It is a poor reflection of the reality of Amber.

The universe was originally filled with chaos. Reality was constantly changing without rhyme or reason. The only constant was the deep rift of the Abyss from whence nothing ever returned. The only creatures able to survive and prosper were demons who could withstand the constant flux of reality and the peoples of the Courts of Chaos whose shapeshifting powers let them constantly adapt to the environment.

There came a rebel Son of Chaos who took the Eye of the Serpent and formed of his own blood a pattern in the chaos. This was the Pattern. Pattern brought Order to the universe countering the influence of Chaos. This created innumerable Shadows between Chaos and Pattern. These Shadows are reflections of Reality as affected by Chaos.

Then there came Oberon, First King of Amber. He was able to walk the Pattern and in so doing gained some mastery over Shadow. During his long rule, he sired many children who became the Princesses and Princes of Amber. It was discovered that those who shared his blood could also walk the Pattern and gain its power. Oberon is noted for his almost detached disregard for his children as anything other than political tools. His only true care was for the Kingdom of Amber. He frequently took long wanderings through Shadows and on one occasion did not return.

Believing that Amber had too long been without leadership, one of Oberon’s children, Eric, claimed for himself the Crown of Amber. It was for this reason the his brothers, Bleys and Corwyn, did wage war upon Amber seeking to dethrone Eric. It was during the middle of this confrontation that a new threat appeared. The Black Road…

The Black Road was created by the Courts of Chaos to destabilize the Shadows through which it passed and to permit the Courts of Chaos to strike directly into the heart of Amber. Only by joining forces together were the children of Oberon able to abate such a horrendous attack. But their victory was not without cost. Oberon, who had returned from his hiatus, and Eric both sacrificed their lives and another of Oberon’s children, Brand, was discovered to have been a traitor. Brand was aiding Chaos so as to destroy the Pattern and create a new Pattern in his own image. In his final attempts to stay his siblings, he fell into the Abyss while pulling his sister, Deirdre, in with him.

Wearied and saddened, the Amberites returned home to adjust and rebuild. The survivors concluded that of all the remaining children of Oberon, Random was the best one to have rule. Most of them probably realized that nobody else would support them but didn’t want one of the others to take the crown.

As time passed, this generation went out amongst Shadow. In there travels there is the occasional child left behind in Shadow until the day when the Court of Amber decides that it is time for the child to brought home and taught of their heritage.

This is the story of the new generation.
