Nevun Shadwell is captain of the guard of the small town of Stronton, located on the banks of the White River in the Barony of Harkenwold. Nevun is tough as nails, fundamentally pragmatic, and supremely focused on his objective (whatever that may be at the moment). He appears to be in his early- to mid-thirties, but has seen more than his fair share of battle in that time, and it shows in his scarred face and haunted blue eyes.
For a time, Nevun refused to divulge his reasons for leaving Stronton and setting out into the world. When asked, he would often reply that “my reasons for traveling are my own,” or request that his questioner “ask again when I have given you reason to think that I trust you.” After realizing the worth of his current companions, however, and after they helped him to fight off a group of deranged Vecnites, Nevun saw fit to trust the group with the truth of his goal: he had left Stronton bound for Winterhaven, seeking a cleric by the name of Courtenay Stone, who may have the power to cure his son of a deadly disease.
Four days prior to Nevun’s departure from Winterhaven, Nevun’s son, Thom, was found lying unconscious in a field, clutching a mysterious black dagger. In the days that followed, Thom remained in a semi-conscious state, often speaking in a strange tongue, and the flesh of his right hand began to blacken and putrefy. Seeing that the putrefaction was likely to spread, Nevun summoned the town’s healer, who identified Thom’s malady as “serpere putrescat,” or “creeping rot.” The healer confirmed that the malady was of magical origin and that a cure was beyond his own power, and sent Nevun north to the town of Winterhaven to confer with Courtenay Stone, a cleric in Winterhaven’s temple to the Raven Queen. Seeing no option other than to leave his family and seek a cure, Nevun put a friend in charge of the Stronton guard, wrapped the mysterious dagger in an oilcloth and stuffed it into his bedroll, and boarded a barge to Whitetree.
Nevun also really hates goblins. Just ask Thob.
