Personality mark VII was bonded with biomechanical unit type XI in the early third century of Faerun, near the climax of the Githi wars. During its time in the faerunian dimensional military, it was known by its production number, 5733913. It was during one of these battles within the githi home dimension that their exit portals ceased functioning due to Githi sabotage. Mark VII found himself and his squad trapped far behind enemy lines and in a hostile and incomprehensibly alien dimension. Almost three hundred years after the Githi war ended, the entity which now reffered to itself as “Steeple” coalesced in the town of Blackmoor. His armour was patched with pieces of his former squad mates, and his warforged gaze – normally inert and lifeless – now burned with a cold green flame, his warforged heart replaced by a green crystal which now motivates him – a passing gift from his time trapped in the Githi dimension. Now, he wanders the world, seeking something which he himself cannot even explain.
Steeple is a Biomechanical construct of fearsome appearance and stature. While Warforged are not common in the lands of Faerun, Steeple breaks away from the standard appearance of his fellow machines. He seems to be made almost entirely of patchwork metal and pieces of Armour which have been welded or strapped to him. His arms and legs are of different lengths, and appear to even be from varying models of biomechanical units.
Steeple is usually gruff to those that he does not know, but he is very caring to his allies (Whether this is due to the time he spent and bonds that he shared while trapped in the Gith dimension is unknown). A fierce fighter, Steeple takes no pleasure in killing, save that of killing the Githyanki and Githzerai. Despite his programming towards these races, however, Steeple has learned through his time in the Gith dimension that there are Gith who have broken their bonds to their fellow Gith and work to help good.
Perhaps Steeple’s most interesting feature is his desire for justice and good. The cold green crystal which replaces his heart and most of his programming seems to motivate him to “Do Good” – a geas which he cannot resist. He follows a code which does not allow him to harm innocents and to only kill members of evil races. Despite this, however, Steeple still offers prayers for the dead that he leaves in his wake – Civilized races and Monsterkin alike.
Recently Steeple lost one of his fingers, the aftermath of an encounter with an evil spirit. The ghost had been forced to inhabit a magical ring, and had grown corrupted over its years trapped in its magical prison. It had used its powers to cause a series of gruesome murders in order to avenge its imprisonment. Steeple acquired the ring and found that it was bonded to him, making him incapable of removing it. After Steeple and his fellow adventurers found a wizard who was able to remove the ring, Steeple faced a conflict of interest. Motivated by a power to do good, he realized that if he destroyed the spirit and let it pass on, it would be a respite from it’s torture inside the ring. However, the wizard admitted that the bonding was far too strong for him to dissolve easily. Steeple believed that it had to be punished for the deaths it orchestrated, and so his finger and the ring were removed by the wizard and thrown into a jungle deep in the planar seas.
Steeple’s personality Mark VII was also reset, after Steeple killed a pair of tax collectors that he believed to be evil yuan-ti. After their deaths, however, he could find no proof of their ophidian nature. His code of ethics broken, his internal motivator died. After a time, he was rebooted with his personality core reset to its factory conditions. As such, he beleived that he was still in the height of the Githi war, and that one of his fellow adventurers, a sociopathic Eladrin named Marcus, was his lieutenant. After 5733913 discovered that the present date was several centuries after the Githi wars, he went berserk and was eventually arrested. After discovering that his captors were Yuan-ti, however, his internal motivator restarted and his personality as ‘Steeple’ was re-initiated.
