Shadow In 500 or Less
Innsha mire is filled with many horrors. The foul swamp is best known for it’s crocodiles, zombies, and its lone inhabitant, an elven witch named Nedavin. She’s lived there for as long as anyone can remember, lining paths for the caravan with animal skulls and shrunken heads. Insane and blind, the old witch has never actually harmed anyone, although the elves in Felwynne swear that she is the cause of the corruption in the swamp.
About 50 years ago, the caravan was shocked to find that Nedavin had a drow child at her side. It quickly became apparent that the girl was the witch’s apprentice. After a few minutes with the child, the travelers decided that the girl was as crazy as the hag. She mimicked the witch so well the caravan came to call her Shadow.
Her familiar is Momoa, a weasel.

Shadow’s Idealism
Rinn Nassad (as named by her mentor) is actually quite different from her teacher. While personal freedom is a thing to be cherished, she has a much greater appreciation for law and order than her master. Rinn likes order where Nedavin likes disarray. She enjoys taking part in small traditions around the mire. Scaring the simple-minded fools in the caravan is just one example.
She also believes that if a person is not smart enough to see that they are being manipulated, it is their own fault. It’s not bad to lie, cheat or trick a person, becasue it’s their fault for allowing it. She sees laws as a great way to manipulate others to do your bidding, or even simply maintain peace. She feels no regret in breaking the law if its convenient.
Rinn greatly respects knowledge. Material wealth can be lost much easier than your mind. She sees people who are less educated as lesser people. Knowledge is power. She respects self control and open minded-ness, believing it will allow better understanding. She loves knowledge more than freedom. Being a recluse helps with that, as the average person would find her research quite disturbing. So while in the mire she is free to dissect animals and experiment with her blood soaked runes to her hearts content.
Shadow dislikes structured society. This is more because of the racism, particularly against drow. She noticed how the caravan was scared and leery of her. They were superstitious, uneducated, and full of hatred for the bog and all it’s inhabitants. She despised them for it. Nedavin always taught her that if someone feared you, you had power over them. So she learned to enjoy their fear. She also believes in knowing one’s enemies, and the caravan doesn’t even know her true name. (If they aren’t her enemy, why do they fear her so much?)
In many ways, Rinn is like a child. She doesn’t understand how things really work outside of the bog. She’s curious, and would enjoy learning about other cultures and ways of life, in her own creepy way. A dream for her could be to study at a mage school, or studding exotic wildlife on research trips, or crafting her own unique spell or voodoo fetish.
Character questions:
1. What is your favourite colour and why?
Shadows favourite colours are green and purple.
Green reminds her of the centuries buildup of moss and decaying peat that make up the marsh floor.
Purple is the colour of magic. It’s also the color of some of her favourite flowering plants. Lythrum can be used to cure many ailments like dysentery and bleeding, and the rare orchid Vanda can be used to heal eczema and rheumatism.
2. What is best in life?
Books, scrolls and ancient texts. The smell of musty paper. The hefty weight of an exceptionally large tome. The crinkly sound paper makes when you flip the page. She even loves the feel of leather binding.
(….mmmmm…. new book smell….)
