Brutus is the favored son of the current king of the Mithralbreaker clan, his mother Orianna Goldeater. Considered young for the Mithralbreaker clan (the rough equivalent of in his late teens for a human), Brutus already displays a fine thick beard and a powerful bald head, signs of character and virility amongst his people. (No, seriously, it’s true.) He believes strongly in his clan’s principles, and believes that all other dwarf clans could stand to learn something from the Mithralbreaker approach… not necessarily to battle or construction, but rather the vigor and passion with which Mithralbreakers approach all aspects of dwarvish life.
Brutus has actually spent most of his life outside his family’s underground holds, taking construction (and partially destruction) jobs for other dwarf clans as well as humans. (The Mithralbreakers do not consider working for humans shameful… elves, perhaps, but not humans, who they sometimes seem to consider rather tall and lanky dwarves who bathe too much.) The most recent of these was building a large, paved trade road through a valley that connected two human kingdoms. On the ground, they often spent as much time clearing goblins, kobolds, and the occasional orc pack as they did boulders and trees, but the true annoyance came from the wood elves that lived in the forest at the top of the cliffs. The elves would often take great delight in gathering at the edges of the cliffs to watch the dwarves labor, singing mocking songs and otherwise teasing and jeering at the workers below.
Despite the clan’s reputation as brutes and even sometimes bullies, Brutus and his siblings refused to allow the other workers to attack the elves for their mockery. When asked if they had no dwarven pride, Brutus responded, “Has your asshole rusted shut and made you spew dirt from your mouth?! I’ve more pride than to start a war over some childish elf-song!” Still, it galled him greatly, and while the Mithralbreaker clan never had any great love for elves, Brutus dislikes them more than most.
