The more recent known information about Tess’ background is as follows:

Tess, as she is commonly known, is the third child of the Variel, an Utlurian noble, family. She spent a large portion of her formative years in what would appear from an outside observer’s point of view as general obscurity. There is very little available about her from anyone who is not a direct relation or of the family’s employ.

In the past 40 years, Tess has taken more of an active interest in the running of the Utlurian government. While it was common knowledge she was not likely to have any particular involvement with ruling, she continued to attend as many meetings as she could (from a legal standpoint). The only meetings missed were those which were closeted and restricted to solely government officials. It is fairly common knowledge amongst those not actively involved in governance that Tess is the go-to person if a layman’s explanation was needed. She wielded little actual power, but was oddly seen as the popular “people’s choice” style government official… despite not actually being an official at all.

When the invitation came in for the Princess Rhodene’s Naming Day Party, it had been addressed to the family, and it was generally assumed that Jiardem, the eldest son in the family, would attend, as he would be the highest ranking official in the family with their father sequestered in a vote debate at the time. For unknown reasons, the invitation passed to Tess, who happily accepted the invitation and promptly made plans to travel.
