The Legend of the Reach
Commander Matthews, a former member of the Angels of Absolution, is a self made hero. Once just a regular member of the Deathwatch, he showed a strength and valor that would make any chapter proud. That stacked with his abnormal height, makes him an intimidating figure, and an easy name to remember.
Matthews was already a respected marine come the time of a Chaos invasion of (Data Corrupted), and like anyone else stationed there, he found himself fighting an unrelenting horde of the corrupt and vile World Eaters. It is true that on that day, the power of the inquisition to hold the reach looked as if it could not be enough, for facing a Chaos legion of the first founding would be difficult for an entire chapter. However, on this battle, and some say even the entire war, victory was wrought through blood by but one marine. Holding a bunker that was doomed to fall, Matthews and two other marines fought to the last Bolter shell, even until the very blade of the Imperial Fist had broken. But somewhere in the midst of all that darkness, Matthews hoisted a relic blade, and cut a hole through his enemies, even beheading the very Chaos Lord leading the assault. And it is said, that despite their brutal nature, even the world eaters could not stand without leadership. Matthews was found later on the battlefield, torn limb from limb, but by the will of the emperor he still drew breath. After extensive medical care He now continues as a Watch Commander.
Watch Commander Matthews never let go of his warrior days however. And despite the fact that his rank would normally refuse him this role, he insists on commanding a kill team. In addition, unlike most inquisitors, he will not stay behind while his kill team fights, he takes on the hardest missions he can and fights side by side with his battle brothers. His kill team is hand selected. Out of all the Deathwatch marines in the reach, only those he deems worthy may be in his kill team, this makes it quite the honor. However, when choosing his kill team he doesn’t place any value on their accomplishments, their rank, or their prizes, but seems only to care about the strength of their character. Matthews is very hard on his marines, and his methods seem brutal even to the inquisition. But in the eyes of those he leads, he is a friend. His kill team respects him and follows his orders, and claim that he would gladly die for any one of them, even if his personality seems vastly to the contrary.
Those who try to work with Matthews find it to be a challenging task. He is stubborn beyond all expectations, and even his superiors find it easiest to let him just do things his own way. If you ask among the upper command what they think of Matthews, they will claim that he is a Marine of great honor, but has no other qualities that make him deserving of his rank, or even a rank below.
