bonus to surprise opponents (not in metal armor). Rynyn must either be alone, or with a party comprised only of elves or halflings (also not in metal armor), or 90 feet or more away from his party. Opponents suffer a -4 penalty to their surprise die rolls. If opening a door or screen to attack, this penalty is reduced to -2.
Passing within 10 feet of a concealed door gives Rynyn a one-in-six chance (roll a 1 on 1d6) to notice it. If actively searching for such doors, Rynyn has a one-in-three chance (roll a 1 or 2 on 1d6) to find a secret door and a one-in-two chance (roll a 1, 2, or 3 on 1d6) to discover a concealed portal.

Trail Sense: Rynyn’s chance of getting lost in any outdoor land setting is reduced by 10%. Furthermore, his base chance of getting lost in Forests will not exceed 20%. This is not cumulative with other benefits, such as the one for the direction sense proficiency.
Overland Guiding: Rynyn is able to find the optimum trail through rough terrain, increasing the party’s movement rate when traversing long distances. The movement costs indicate points of movement spent per mile of travel; when moving through the various terrain types, subtract the points from the total movement available to the party for that day.

Marksmanship (Composite Bows): Owing to his steady hand and acute vision, Rynyn has a +1 bonus to the attacks made with Composite Bows.
Recognize Trail Hazard. Rynyn is able to recognize natural hazards, enabling him and his companions to avoid them. Typical hazards include quicksand, sinkholes, slippery slopes, and thin ice. Rynyn has no special ability to recognize man-made hazards, such as pit traps or dangerous bridges, nor does he have any special talent for anticipating encounters with hostile natives or animals. Rynyn’s chance of recognizing a hazard is 10% per experience level; to a maximum chance of 90% at ninth level.
Special Hindrances: By moving ahead of the party, Rynyn places himself in a position of risk. Separated from his companions, Rynyn is more likely to be the victim of enemy attacks. He runs a greater risk of drawing fire from snipers, and is more susceptible to ambushes from hostile creatures. If he fails to recognize a hazard, he’ll probably be the first to become a victim.

Bio
When the elves fled the Old Elven Woods in 4135 (see Elven Diaspora wiki), most elderly and fighting age elves stayed behind as a rear guard expecting to die with their cornered human allies (which they did). Each elven tribe randomly chose a handful of fighting-age elves to escort the youngest elves to the safety of the Shomaal. Rynyn’s grandfather, Rymynos Ardemdra, was one of the chosen. Though obviously not his fault, Rynyn had always felt unfairly blessed by having an intact family. This made him a bit of a loner and he would often trek by himself some distance away from his tribe teaching himself the ways of a pathfinder ranger. A few months ago, while his tribe was working the southern Sob-Rooz border hunting Claacos, they were overwhelmed by an unexpectedly large swarm of the fiends. Rynyn was as usual off by himself. When he realized what was happening, he rushed to assist. After firing all of his arrows, he plunged into melee with his sword, hacking and hacking and hacking. He doesn’t remember much after that except waking feverish by himself some distance away. Did he flee? Did somebody carry him off? When he returned to the site of the battle, it was scavenged clear of bodies both elven and Claacos. This was a dire omen. If his tribe had been victorious, they would have taken their dead and left whatever Claacos they couldn’t carry for food and chitin. The lack of any Claacos corpses meant the Claacos prevailed and called more to carry off all of the “meat”. Since then, Rynyn has been wandering alone trying to pick up the trail of any survivors of his tribe. He now finds himself in Bandar on the way to Rasht where the ice elves are camped for the winter. Southern elves often head north in the winter to trade with the ice elves. Perhaps there is news there, but ho! On this the darkest of nights, off the main road, there is a fire ahead. Rynyn approaches cautiously and sees a deep elf, another wood elf, two half-elves, and a human huddled around a small fire…
