Campfire tales speak of a once proud druid who dwelt in the verdant plains south of Rhestilor and led several tribes of nomads. These nomads were said to have built a massive stone lion in honor of the great druid, who taught them the ways of the lion and how to live at peace with the proud creatures.

Yet when dark times fell on Rhest, their shadow too fell upon the lion’s plains.

It began when Rhestilian nobles hunted and killed a lion monarch for sport, the nomads reacted with violence for the affront and slew the nobles to a man. Rhest answered by marching its army against the southern plains, burning everything they came across and slaughtering every nomad they found. The tribes stood little chance against the might of Rhestilor, even when the lions themselves rose to defend them.

At last, the cavaliers of Rhest confronted the druid, and slew him between the paws of his own shrine. But the night after the soldiers returned to their city, doom came to Rhest. Ghostly lions stalked the city, killing anyone they found. When dawn came, the much of the populace lay dead including every soldier in the city.

Rhest never recovered from the Night of the Lion and in the decades that followed declined to a shade of its former glory. Eventually it fell to the lion’s curse.
