Erzulie is the closest thing the band has to a divine enemy. Laurel Kladakos killed Erzulie’s scion Marie Glapion, who was in the employ of Kane Taoka.

Erzulie has demanded of Laurel that this mistake be rectified. Laurel has one year to venture to Guinee and retrieve Marie or Erzulie will take ultimate revenge for the death of her daughter. Meanwhile, Erzulie intends to nudge Laurel forward with the use of “debt collectors.”

The first such debt collector appeared at the Inn at Furnace Creek. She wore a name badge that read Meagan Reese and caused Laurel to relive the death of Marie from the perspective of the victim every time Laurel slept.

The second debt collector was sent to Gunnar and Laurel’s wedding and placed a “Scarlet Letter” upon Laurel’s forehead, a scar that reads “MURDERER”.
