Dreams are a window for some, a vision into a fantasy they desire to obtain. For others, for those who live a thousand lifetimes, they are a portal to memories. And for the select few, they bring the mystical hint of destiny. When one has dreams of all three types, the problem lies in determining which is which. The dreamer can, of course, simply ignore it, if the gods will let her. But when the mantle of responsibility is placed on the shoulders of an immortal, it is difficult to ignore a gift, or simultaneously a curse, which plays itself out in lifetime after lifetime.
Kayah Alanaron has been a seer for as long as she can remember, and she can remember a great deal. A Deva whose memories stretch back for thousands of years to empires long forgotten by human kind, she is gifted in each rebirth with the sight of great destinies. Each time she is reborn, the gift begins weakly and gains strength with each passing year. It grows strongest at a time of greatest conflict, a time when she, in her wisdom, must pass on the knowledge that will lead to the best possible outcome. But not all listen to the voice of prophecy.
Her gift for prophetic vision was not the only talent given to the Deva. With a strong psionic mind, Kayah has committed her Battlemind abilities to help in the battles she deems important to destiny. This, unfortunately, has gotten her killed on numerous occasions. Only two years ago, she was slain during a horrific battle and reawoke on a mountain top, reborn in a different place, and perhaps, for her, a different time. It is difficult for Kayah to distinguish between past, present, and future, and often between visionary dream and reality.
To many, Kayah will seem scattered. She will often speak of the future as if it has already happened. She will speak of events from a thousand years ago as if they occurred the previous day. She will often be lost in thought, trying to determine if something familiar is a vision of her past or her future. She is rarely in a hurry, since eternity stretches out before her. But in a battle, she becomes intensely focused on the matter at hand.
In Kayah’s visions, both past and future, one being continues to remain prominent- another immortal, another seer, a male Deva whom the gods have tied to Kayah in a way that neither understands. Their reunion always heralds the death of one or the other of them, and yet they always return to one another’s arms. Many times she has died in his arms; many times he has died in hers; and many times they have died together. The result is always the same. She both longs to see him and fears what is to come when she does. While he is not around, she does not fear death, only that she will die this time without seeing him, and somehow the chain that ties them will be broken.
