Description

Bio

Towards the end of the Last War, House Cannith and House Lyrandar formed a team of their best artificers and mages (from The Fabricator’s Guild and Lyran’s Gift) to work on a top secret assignment. The goal was to combine the best in warforged technology with the magic of the elements used to power the great airships
Bundles of wooden fibers used in the construction were made from exotic woods cultivated from locations with ties to the elemental planes. The usual metal plating was replaced with enchanted bones and carapace of magical beasts with a bent towards thunder and lightning. And special Khyber dragonshards, enchanted with bound elemental magic, were embedded in the core of the living constructs.
While powerful, the first of the experimental warforged were a total disaster. They were uncontrollable engines of pure rage and destruction, so volatile as to be useless even as shock-troops. As the experiments progressed, the artificers and mages inched closer to refining a few usable prototypes. While their creations could still channel the fury of the elements, they developed protocols that enabled the constructs to turn it on and off and direct it (albeit somewhat unreliably). The new prototypes had the better part of a normal warforged’s ability to reason and learn, but were more rash and less prone to adapt to normal socialization. One such unit was 01010100 01101000 01110101 01101110 01100100 01100001 01110010 (or 01, often mis-pronounced Owen ,for short).
These prototypes never saw any action in the Last War proper, but were used in a few secretive test runs where swift action was needed and few witnesses were likely to remain. On one such mission, things went horribly wrong when a rogue magical artillery blast hit their position. The other prototypes and developers on the mission were obliterated. 01 was tossed in the air and landed on his head…hard. The event jostled his memory cores, causing a form of amnesia. With no memory of his creation and no one he knew left standing, he wandered into the surrounding landscape. The researchers who came after no one reported back presumed 01 had been obliterated.
Wandering the nearby wilderness, 01 was attacked by a local group of barbarians and a fierce battle ensued. While he slew many, 01 was eventually put down…or so they thought. He was taken back as a trophy, but came back to consciousness not long after. The tribes elder stepped in, praised his strength and resilience, and sensed his potential importance in the fate of the land (perhaps somehow matching something from a vision, prophecy, or legend). After some tense months, he was eventually accepted into the tribe. While he earned the respect by all through his hard work and ability, he owed the tribe a debt for those he had killed. That debt has just been fulfilled as our story begins.
The only clue 01 has to his identity is the number stamped on the sole of his right foot: 01010100 01101000 01110101 01101110 01100100 01100001 01110010. One of his main short term goals is to earn a real name through his deeds and actions.
After the passing of the Treaty of Thronehold, work continued in secret for a short time. Eventually, both sides began to grow leery of each other’s intents and fear grew of the potential political backlash should the project be discovered. Both sides unilaterally withdrew funding from the project and sealed the doors to the secret forge. Most of the artificers and mages went on to pursue other work, but a few harbor the desire to resume and complete the project. While not common knowledge even amongst the elite of either house, the few house nobles aware of the project would like to ensure the details and their involvement beyond the treaty remain hidden.

During the war: 01 was assigned with Tak to secure the Lord Major Bren ir’Gadden, a Brelish officer and nobleman who was captured in a skirmish a few days ago. He is being held in a tower on the hillside.
