Salel, or ‘Sal’ to his friends, is a curious young human from the streets of Sharn. He was born a Sakah to one of the Carrion Tribes in the hellish land known as the Demon Wastes. When he was just seven, a band of adventurers came to his tribe. Silas Longshanks was a member of that party, attempting to work with the Carrion Tribes to recover Eberron Dragonshards. Salel was Sakah, blessed by the fiends, but his existence was a threat to the tribe’s Warchief. One of Silas’ party members, an aging cleric of the Sovereign Host, noticed the burning hatred in the eyes of the Warchief towards young Salel. When the party hastily left the Wastes, followed by a hail of arrows and spears as their hosts tired of their constant questioning and collecting of dragonshards, Salel was brought along by the cleric. They took the young Salel with them, back to the lands they hailed from, and far away from the cursed land of his birth.
It was in Sharn that Salel spent the rest of his formative years. Living with voices whispering in the back of your mind, waking nightmares of a world destroyed by ice and fire, and eyes that are far from normal would be enough to make any child’s life difficult. In Sharn however, the largest metropolis on Khorvaire, anyone can find their place.
It was around the age of 14 that Salel actually started listening to the voices, or maybe it was then that the voices became clear. He found that he was able to do certain things; things that were normally the purview of wizards. He practiced these gifts in secrecy, honing his Eldritch Blasts into a truly frightening thing. This gift, or curse, aided him in pursuing a life of adventure much like the party who saved him from his tribe.
Growing up, Salel rarely had troubles with making friends. Everyone agreed that the young man had an eerie way with people. When he looked at you with those eyes, you would sometimes find yourself agreeing with him despite yourself or just losing time. He did, however, have trouble with the Watch. It’s rough surviving in Sharn by yourself, and quite easy to fall in with the wrong people.
When he was about 15, Sal got into business with a gnome by the name of Syl Shortstone. Syl was quite talented at the production of Dreamlily, and soon the two had carved out a small corner of the Cogs. They named this rundown store “The Dreamer’s Corner”, the ‘front’ of which was a quasi-legal alchemist’s shop. Above the storefront is the living space for the two. In comparison to the shop, the living quarters, while small and sparse, are tastefully decorated. Sal saved up, and eventually put together an impressive Alchemist’s Lab in the back; now they were truly in business. Building a reputation for ‘no questions asked’ they ended up doing a lot of work for the monstrous immigrants from Droaam. You would be surprised how often a goblin can get stabbed in a knife fight over the smallest things. This however got the attention of Daask, and thanks to a terse and hasty negotiation, rather than dying horribly and being cooked for some ogre’s meal, they now pay a ‘protection fee’ to the organization.
At around 17, Salel met back up with (insert Silas’s slugtext) and joined on with SLAIPO, leaving management of his business to Syl. It was here he was introduced to Harlan Celenal and taken on as an apprentice historian and scholar.
He studied the history of Eberron’s earliest age, the Age of Demons, under the watchful eye of Harlan. It was in this ancient lore that Salel found his true calling. He was fascinated by this oldest and most powerful of empires, so much so that he dedicated many nights to pouring over ancient tomes in search of more and more knowledge.
Salel is something of a walking contradiction. Slightly unstable, he presents multiple faces to those he meets. On the one hand, he can be charming, erudite, and civil. But beneath the veneer of respectability is a vicious temper and unchecked ambition. He is patient and cunning, yet when alone, he flies into a fury, screaming and shrieking, tearing at his skin and destroying everything around him in a thunderous explosion of Eldritch energy.
He has one goal, one reason for existence: He covets power above all else. In the end, it may even destroy him.
Salel seeks to hone himself and his abilities through adventuring for (Insert Silas’s slugtext), and he hopes that his adventures will bring him closer to more knowledge of the Age of Demons.
The quest for power is never-ending and Salel has much to learn..
