Scion of the lesser noble house of Morgan, and third sibling of five, Edward Morgan’s fate was fairly well dictated for him, even from a very young age. His was a family spacers, one of many to claim to be from the flock of settlers who first colonized the Rock of Bral, and their family’s name and fortune had been built upon mercantile trade. Spelljamming was in their blood and it was simply a forgone conclusion that like all the male child of the family line, Edward too would same day make his way to space…
Just not at the helm of a merchant ship.
Edward’s family, like many nobles of the Rock, stand on tradition. In this case, the first born son is always the one to inherit the title and the family business but even despite this, the rest of the sons and daughters are still held to certain expectations. The daughters are expected to marry into other, well to do noble families, thus increasing the House of Morgan’s power and status and the other sons, like Edward himself, are made to enroll in the Bralian Naval Warfare College to serve the country that allowed their family to become great. The young man was no different.
Spending years training under the watchful eye of veteran spacers, Edward Morgan learned everything he needed to know about the operation of a Spelljamming vessel: how to tend rigging and sails, how to move around the ship without falling from the gravity well and being lost, basic navigation, emergency repairs… And of course the ways of military naval combat. He was, in brief, an excellent student… with the noted exception of his temper. It was not uncommon to hear tale of the young man challenging his fellow students who leveled insult against himself or his family name to duels of honor to settle the dispute.
When graduation finally came, Edward graduated near the top of his class was expected by his parents. What was not expected, however, was the choice that he ultimately made…
Edward had always been known for his reasoning and his even temperament, save for his disposition towards duels of honor, so, when he announced that he would be turning down his officer’s commission in favor of joining a more independent venture, his family was naturally shocked.
You see, the young man had hunger for adventure, for seeing more of the universe than might be allowed him simply sitting in the home fleet around Bral, waiting for enemies that might never come.
His parents were not pleased.
In the end, the only thing that kept Edward from being entirely disowned by his family was an agreement to join the ranks of Bral’s own Royal Explorator Fleet, the Bralian Exploration Society. In this way he would, as the Morgan family always had, still be serving the good of The Rock, even if he wouldn’t be a naval officer. Even still though, while not outright disowned, the young man /was/ still cut off from access to the family fortune. At least until such time as his parents either cease to be angry with him or pass on…
And so, armed with the knowledge earned at the academy and his family’s expectations, Edward Morgan joined the Society with dreams of adventure and personal glory, taking his first post aboard ship as the Quarter Master of the newly minted Tireless Wanderer.
