PULSAR CLASS EXPLORATION CRUISER – Modified
While the Sovereigns have proven themselves to be capable explorers and defensive assets, they are some of the most costly starships in existence. The Pulsar’s design is akin to the Galaxy/Nebula relationship, a complimentary design to fill in for the larger ship’s lack of numbers. In the years since its introduction, the Pulsar has proven itself to be a valuable asset to Starfleet.
Classification: The Pulsar is classified as an explorer with a secondary tactical support role.
Design: The design of the Pulsar draws heavily from the Sovereign and Nebula-class vessels. The saucer section is a re-engineered version of the type used for the Sovereign. A greatly truncated secondary hull contains the warp core, navigational deflector, fuel storage and main shuttlebay. Employing an external pod configuration similar to the type found aboard the Nebula-class makes up the lost space. This massive structure contains the sensors, storage space and torpedo launchers necessary to support the ship.
Engineering: The proven FTW-2 warp drive powers twin nacelles at the vessel’s sides for speeds up to warp 9.75 for 12 hours or a cruising speed of warp 6. The twin FIH-1 impulse engines and fusion reactors provide ample maneuvering and auxiliary power.
Update: Following the Ipsus rescue incident, the warp core and nacelles were upgraded to FTW-3 status. See below for details.
Tactical: The Pulsar sports a phaser array that is as all encompassing and deadly as the system mounted aboard the Galaxy-class. The FPQ-2 torpedo tubes mounted in the pod provide a devastating backup punch and are capable of utilizing both standard and quantum torpedoes. Although the pod system is not the swapable version used in the Trafalgar-class, the sensor suite can be switched out for any number of configurations at any reasonably equipped starbase within hours. This ability allows the Pulsar to employ intelligence gathering and tactical support sensors for any number of fleet support missions.
Crew Support/Computer Systems: With a design emphasis on automated support systems and cruising range, the Pulsar’s crew compliment is small for such a large vessel. This allows for crew comforts and amenities that far outclass many vessels of the same size. Assignment to a Pulsar-class vessel is a popular duty and is considered a fast track to promotion. The computer system employed by the Pulsar is an all bioneural makeup with an isolinear backup.
Development and Construction History: The Pulsar was designed at Starfleet Engineering on Terra with initial construction taking place at Utopia Planitia. Further construction has been distributed to numerous facilities throughout the Federation. An initial order for fifteen units has been approved with an open option for 10 more. Of the twelve Pulsars constructed to date, 5 have been converted into TransWarp vessels, 2 of these lost, all remaining Pulsars are in active
COMMAND CREW SHIP BRIEFING: In spite of appearances to the contrary, you’ll likely want to think of this as an upgraded Intrepid Class (Voyager was an Intrepid) with a massive sensor array tuned specifically for the mission you are on. The Primary hull (saucer section) is that of a Sovereign, and the pod configuration is very similar to the system employed by Nebula’s, though not as flexible. Your ship selection, along with the following upgrades and crew selection, are mission specific, configured to give you the best chance of success in a difficult situation:
Weaponry: Unlike many of Starfleet’s ships, you have torpedo launchers allowing you to fire quantums, photons, or a mix of them from the same launcher, avoiding the need to have separate launcher systems and crews to service them to be able to fire both weapons while still achieving nearly the same launch rate. Additionally, your strongest firing area is Aft, being able to fire 12 phasers and 8 torpedoes in that arc compared to 10 phasers and 8 torpedoes to Port or Starboard, and only 8 phasers and 8 torpedoes Forward.
Defensive: Your shields are the latest version of the new Regenerative Shielding resulting directly from Borg reverse engineering efforts. These are still rare within Starfleet, and their existence is widely unknown. Your shield engineering staff has secret clearance and specific training to tune and repair these systems. They provide roughly twice the shielding of typical shields for a ship of this tonnage with the capability of reconfiguring on the fly and even absorbing beam weapon damage and converting it into additional shielding.
Sensors: Your sensor system is typical for most short range applications, but long ranges will be reduced. However, the modifications to the system make them ideal for the specific application of your mission: TransWarp Conduit Exploration. There is a 5% degradation to tactical applications and a 10% degradation of standard long range applications, while the short range lateral sensors are 10% more effective due to their expanded substance detection capabilities and the long range sensors are 10% more effective when used to locate suitable TransWarp openings and endpoints.
Engines: TransWarp capable, your engines are able to create TransWarp conduits rather than merely travel through them. The mathematics to do so are daunting, thus your computer systems and crew, and care must be taken to select an appropriate entry and exit point, thus your sensor systems. This is one of only 2 ships with this capability. 5 ships received this upgrade initially, however 3 have been lost trying to create the specific STWC your mission assignment will have you working on. Due to the nature of the loses, there is no way to ascertain what happened to them or even probable causes for their disappearances.
Update: Replacement parts used to upgrade the nacelles to FTW-3 capability along with a new TW-3 warp core following the Ipsus rescue incident. The new engines are capable of faster TW flight (cutting, not traveling existing conduits) or larger conduits, theoretically bringing large fleets along with them as they cut the conduit.
Computers: The M-16 isolinear III computer system uses “bio-neural gel packs” in addition to a slower but proven traditional isolinear chip backup system. The system is designed to utilize synthetic neurons based on the organization of neurons and synapses in the human brain. The system essentially “grows” new computer circuits as needed, allowing the computer to take a “best guess” in cases where there is insufficient information to make a definitive statement in a logical manner rather than having to spend the time attempting to calculate all possible actions. In essence, it uses a more intuitive process to arrive at a decision. The USS Marathon is equipped with two M-16 computer cores. It was felt that this system was essential to accomplish the goals of the mission and to support the crew in times of difficulty by equipping it with EEHC (Enhanced Emergency Holographic Crew) capability. You may activate any of these at the cost of 1 point of power per position, doubling in cost per additional holograph:

The computational power to run holographic personnel is roughly equal to the power output of the ship if the second core is slaved to the first. Be aware: loss of a computer core restricts the holographic personnel the ship can maintain, and holographic manifestations may restrict other computer heavy tasks.
Crew: Your crew is highly trained in the skill set necessary for this mission. Your engineering and science officers are all professional to expert at working TransWarp theory and applications, and many of them have advanced computer expertise. They were specifically selected for this ship and this mission due to their capabilities and skills, though there may be some areas of their profiles that are less than what may have been looked for in other postings and crew conflict could is a potential issue. For this reason, your first officer was selected from a ship that recently underwent such difficulties, and your ship’s counselor is also from the same ship and well versed in dealing with difficult people.
Structural Integrity: Upgraded after the incident in the TW Domain and the rescue of the Ipsus. The New SIF is the same one being deployed on Starfleet’s new Guardian class Battleships, the most intensive every put on a Starfleet vessel, or any vessel in the Alpha quadrant as far as Starfleet Intelligence is aware of.
Price tag: With the upgraded SIF, TW3 warp core and nacelle upgrades, the USS Marathon weighs in as the most expensive ship in Starfleet.
Differences Between the Sovereign and Pulsar Primary Hulls:
Lower decks are all engineering except for the holodecks, since it’s such an abbreviated hull and your engineering section is necessarily large. The only quarters not in the primary hull are for the torpedo and sensor crew in the pod “Cradle”, the part that the mission pod fits into, that has a basic enlisted bunkroom for 10. * Sick Bay is in the primary hull directly behind computer core 1.
* The ship’s lounge “P Squared” is on Deck 12, Forward section, or 12 Forward in the area marked “cargo stores” on the Sovereign primary hull deckplan.
* The impulse engines are at the rear of the primary hull on decks 8 through 12.
* 3 VIP Quarters is greatly reduced, replaced with additional crew quarters.
* 4 Large Holodeck moved to secondary hull, replaced with additional crew quarters.
* 9 Cargo Stores moved to secondary hull, , replaced with ship’s lounge.
* 11 Probe Assembly And Handling Bay moved to mission pod mounting.
* 12 Torpedo Launcher moved to mission pod mounting.
