In a city of the area lived an older human blacksmith named Kelren Thundersteel with a gnome
assistant named Belmorn. It was a simple city where the deity celebrated was St. Cuthbert and he was a devout follower of his teachings. One day while out playing in the woods, his son decided to take a less traveled path to look for a shortcut home. It was off the beaten path that they discovered the shell of a warforged, though they had only heard about them through rumors. They decided to take it back with them (mostly due to the gnomes curiosity about how it worked).
The gnome assistant learned many things about the warforged’s construction and seemingly by accident during the repair of it, reactivated the warforged. The warforged had no memory of where he was before or why he was in the forest in the first place, but it didn’t bother him in the slightest. He took up an apprenticeship under the blacksmith where his first lessons were how to repair himself. It was during this time that he and the blacksmith became good friends, with the blacksmith calling him Roderick, after his favorite horse.
The blacksmith also took time to show him the teachings of St. Cuthbert and eventually the warforged began to question his own spirituality. He found that he could live and die like all living things and asked what would happen to him afterward. He wondered if he had a soul at all, and he wondered if he didn’t have one, could he attain one? At the blacksmith’s recommendation, he began to study the teachings of St. Cuthbert himself and eventually took a position of priesthood, hoping that the mercy of Cuthbert, who himself started as a mortal man, could answer his questions.
The blacksmith died soon after he became a priest of St Cuthbert, feeling that he had finally accomplished a true masterpiece in Roderick. On his deathbed told him that he should go into the world with Cuthbert at his back from now on and discover the answers to the questions he sought after, and that he knew he would see him on the other side.
After burying him properly, Roderick left his city with his new found quest.
