You want to know about me? Here’s what you need to know: point me in the right direction, keep your head down, and stay out of my way. No, now look, don’t go taking that the wrong way or anything. I’m not being a bitch, it’s just that I’m used to working on my own and I sort of have limited time…
Ok, maybe you missed something here: I have horns and a tail, alright? I’ve got devil’s blood in me. There’s a lot of sin in my family history, and that’s just on the human side. I have a lot to make up for, and only a few years to earn redemption for all the sins of my fathers.
See, I was born among a dark cult. I don’t really know the details—the priests wouldn’t talk much about it—but these people were seriously fucked up. They were sacrificing virgins, banging devils—pretty much every bad thing you could imagine, they did. The Church of Sarenrae moved in and “purified” their temple. The cultists were apparently not especially repentant, so I think they were wiped out. My brethren and I were just kids at the time—I was less than a year old—and the Dawnflower took pity on us. We were taken and raised in Sarenrae’s temple by the priests and monks there. It was nice, I guess, but I saw how they looked at us.
The Abbot would often explain to us that while Sarenrae’s mercy was infinite, true redemption could only come through her purifying flame. I want to cleanse myself, to burn out the evil, so that my future children don’t have to suffer under its yoke. I swore vengeance upon Sarenrae’s foes and hope that I can hunt down enough of them to make a difference while I’m still young enough to have a chance at a family.
Yeah, ok, laugh—maybe it’s a pipe dream—but everything is somebody’s fetish, right?
But whatever—I’ll team with you for now, I suppose. I am after the same thing as you, after all: justice for the Beast of Lepistadt. I know some good folks that swear he helped them out—one said he saved them from highwaymen, another that he fixed their mill, and so on. When I heard he had been arrested, I tried to get some of the people he helped to come to Lepistadt to testify, but they were too afraid. Even they started believing the stories when he was charged with such horrific crimes. I don’t buy it for a second though. The way I figure it, his existence comes with a lot of baggage and his monstrous appearance makes people fear him, but he’s just trying to get by and make up for what he is—just like me.
