A Letter from Lady Evelyn Herbert
August 22nd, 1923
To Whom It May Concern:
My dear friend, it is with great sorrow that I write this to notify you of the passing of my father – Lord George Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon. Days after Mr. Carter led us in to the tomb in the Valley of the Kings, the Earl passed from a wasting illness. His health has always been poorly, but the suddenness of his passing is too shocking and too coincidental; bearing consideration of devious acts.
Please make haste to Cairo, my resources are at your disposal. I will have a berth reserved for you on the September 2nd ship out of New York City. Rooms will be held for you at the Cairo Grand Hotel. I appreciate your assistance in these dire days and I fear I have need of you more than ever.
With great respect and regards,
Lady Evelyn Herbert
