The Dark Queen of the West

Mage Sanctum

Hey gang, I’m reading up on getting a Sanctum in the mage book (which would be very awesome) and I was wondering who would be interested in contributing xp to the cause? Each dot of the merit costs the dot*2 xp. So a one dot sanctum costs 2, while a 4 dot sanctum costs 20. The max is 10 because you can split the sanctum points in two categories. You can go up to 5 in size and 5 in security.

Size 1-5:
1 dot – small apartment 1-2 rooms
2 dots – small home 3-4 rooms
3 dots – Large home 5-8 rooms
4 dots – abandoned mansion 9-15 rooms
5 dots – sprawling estate, countless rooms

These don’t have to be a house, they can be a series of caves, sewer tunnels, a penthouse, whatever. The security dots will reduce the dice pool of anyone trying to enter the house by one, and give a +1 initiative bonus to anyone in the house when it is attacked. Given the cost, I don’t think that security is worth xp expenditure. If anything, my character can just pay to have security installed :).

Anyway, my vote is for a 4 dot (size only) sanctum. This will cost 20 xp and offer a place for us to invest in a hollow as well as like a library and that sort of stuff.

My idea is a place on the lake on the outskirts of chicago, maybe with an abandoned lighthouse on the property (high places are great for hallows, so that would be cool) a dock, and little bit of wooded property, with a rambling estate house with a good 8-10 bedrooms (or one for each member of the cabal as it were).

We don’t have to get it now, but I also vote that we get a hallow and a library. The hallow generates mana equal to its dots once per day, and a library just because it would be cool. I vote eventually for a hallow 4 (which costs also costs 20 points) but it can be improved as we go.

I’m willing to put in my current 8 xp into the sanctum, and the 3 I believe I will get from the current scene into the hollow.

It would be cool if we get any bonuses towards this from Ursa, Genghis, or Merlin, and if the new folks can contribute as well (not to mention Westin, if he wishes, since he’s not a mage). We could work in the new characters contributions or whatever after we meet.

So yeah, Sanctums! :)

Vampires gets Havens, which are basically the same thing as Sanctums. Of course, the important investment for Westin is in having a place where he will be safe from the sun, but what you describe could fit that very well. And if the house were rather castle-like, all the better! I’ve already got one dot in Haven size – with the permission of our esteemed Narrator, I could sell the condo and move out into the country.

Speaking of a library, I’ve also got a point in Geomantic Nexus: Potency (Intellect), which grants everyone inside the Nexus an extra dot when rolling Int. Also, Westin has Status: Carthians, which I think discounts his experience cost for investing in a Haven – yeah, it halves the XP cost. So I could contribute some of my current experience – I have about 10 saved up, plus 3 coming from this scene, I hope.

Just wanted to step in and add my two cents here -

I’m currently exploring a variety of story options for the place you’re going to end up with. There will be some benefit if you take Ursa/Genghis/Merlin along, or add additional Cabal members or retainers in the future.

Current counts of potential contribution: Marie: 2 Hallow, 2 Sanctum (Size) 1 Sanctum (Security) Westin: 1 Haven (Size) (Grants a small set of completely light-proof rooms), Geomantic Nexus: Potency (Intellect), Status: Carthians, 3 Resource James: 5 Resource Red Feather: 1 Resource, 1 Hallow, 1 Sanctum (Unassigned?) Damocles: 1 Resource

Assuming everyone wants to contribute to a MegaSanctum/Haven

Bending the rules a bit to allow for some creative combination…

Sanctum (Size) & Haven = 2 & 1H & 1? = 3 or 2 & Some lightblocked rooms (basement?) Sanctum (Security) = 1 & 1? = 1 or 2 Hallow = 2 & 1 = 3

If Red Feather’s go to Size, and so Does Marie’s, you could have a Size 4 Sanctum with no Security.

Resource (Doesn’t really stack this way, but…) = 5 & 1 & 1 & 3 Extras: Geomantic Nexus: Potency (Intellect) (Likely to be combined with a library.) & Whatever other people bring to the new site.

Okay, so I misread how much XP I have. Westin currently has 5 saved up, and will get 2-3 more from this Scene (fingers crossed). So I could definitely buy another point in Haven, since it would only cost me 2 XP instead of the usual 4. Heck, I could buy a third dot, even, and have a fully established base of operations.

So am I reading you correctly, Rase, that their Sanctum would go to purchase the above-ground estate, while my Haven would be like an underground complex? Because that would be awesome! I’m totally going to build up to 5 dots and have tunnels and stuff running all over underground.

That’s correct – Haven is something that is sort of Vampire specific – there can be aboveground Havens, just a complex that is completely lightblocked for a vampire to move around in during the daytime. I just figured basement might be easiest to manage, but it’s possible to have it extend upwards as well.

Bah, Westin’s a traditionalist! And like the song says,

“You know you could flounder,
Sunshine’s a real pounder,
Take it from me!”

“Up overhead they work all day,
Dodging the sun they slave away!”

“A Haven is sounder,
When you think to found her,
Where no one can see!”

Ahem. So, subbasement it is.
