Bio

Dorian Candletongue always knew that the world had been unfair to him. Born the only child to wealthy merchant parents, his path in his earliest years seemed clearly to lead to prestige and greatness. His life was changed forever only days before his eleventh birthday, when the old legend of the family’s draconic descent became all too real.

One fateful day the town of Trader’s Point was swallowed in the turmoil of war as Rovagug’s demonic minions swarmed through the streets. Thousands perished. Dorian, caught alone in the market in the midst of the chaos, fled madly in no particular direction. He was cornered in an alley by one of the demons. His fear and anger welled up and, before he even knew what he was doing, he charged the demon, only to be interrupted by a swarm of undead that almost certainly saved his life. After the dust had cleared, the demon was vanquished and Dorian was surrounded by a horde of frightening beings. He looked down at his hands and screamed. He had grown ugly black claws.

He ran home naively believing that his parents would help him. Instead, he found himself sitting in the back of a wagon with a few of his belongs. He was sent off to an orphanage for deformed, insane, or otherwise unmanageable children like himself. After five years of a nightmarish life that he has since tried hard to erase from his memory, he finally escaped by jumping out a window which, by neglect of the guards, was left open. After a week of walking with little food or water he fainted by the roadside. A farmer found him and took him home. Until he was eighteen he lived with the farmer’s family, where he first learned that he could be accepted. Instead of viewing his heritage as a curse he saw it as a potential blessing. His distrust of humanity was lessened but still very strong. When he had come of age he went to the family mansion to find it abandoned. Apparently disease had claimed the lives of his parents. For years he remained there training in magic, reading countless books about the outside world, and pondering his purpose in life. During this time he began to believe he was destined for greatness. He developed eccentric beliefs and rituals, a suspicion that supernatural forces were lurking behind every nook and cranny, and a belief that anyone who displeased him was scheming his ruin. He eventually came to the conclusion that his books would only teach him to a point, and that true knowledge and power could only be found by experience and travel. He therefore took the name “Candletongue,” found a company of travelers, and threw in his lot with them. He has pursued new powers and secret knowledge ever since.
