Peter is a ‘good kid’ — he was taught from infancy that ‘if only they had known a bit more’, the horrors of the family curse would have been avoided. Peter has absorbed the family dictum that ‘the secret to ending the curse merely waits to be discovered’, and has tried his best to learn what he needs to save his parents. With his ‘higher goal’, he has spent more time studying than most kids, so he has missed out on a lot of the opportunities and social skills that other children his age get. He may be stubborn, for example, but he’s easily fooled.
