THE EMERALD CITY

DETECTIVE ROY MULLENIX

VENATORI POLICE DETECTIVE

DETECTIVE ROY MULLENIX

Description

ASPECTS

HIGH CONCEPT:
VENATORI POLICE DETECTIVE
TROUBLE:
BALANCING TWO CODES
PART OF THE PROBLEM AND PART OF THE SOLUTION

Since surviving a not-quite-Zombie Apocalypse, Roy has changed his stance on balancing the Supernatural and the Law. It used to be a Balancing Act that kept holding him back, trying to fight back the darkness while upholding the Law.

Now, the Law is his Weapon against the Supernatural which with comes consequences. And when the Law can’t protect the people of his City, Roy knows he can’t resort to half-measures.

Invoke: When using Aggressive tactics to screw over members of the Supernatural community above and beyond the norm.

Compel: Roy doesn’t believe in Half-measures anymore. These Monsters need to be made examples of. One line crossed and they’re done.

OTHER ASPECTS:

  • SPECIAL WEAPONS AND TACTICS

Roy’s a Former SWAT guy and Soldier. He has the training of a combat veteran.

Invoke: Anything involving Special Weapons and Tactics.

Compel: His old reflexes are hard to suppress. (Note: this has yet to bite him but very well could).

  • I GO WHERE I’M NEEDED

Roy is pro-active with his efforts to protect the City. He’s always where he is needed most either by design or by not-so-good fortune. He likes to take his lunch on the corners where people sell meth to kids. He sometimes gets calls to the scenes where big things are going down. Ecetera.

Invoke: To Get somewhere expediently or unexpectedly. Could be invoked for Effect to say he is present in a scene or easily on-hand when it wouldn’t otherwise be logical for him to be so.

Compel: Fortune drags him places and has the worst timing in the world.

  • TWO-FISTED PAPERWORK INFILTRATING MONTAGUE’S TASK FORCE

As part of doing Business, Roy has decided to play a game with Lord Montague. By getting into his good graces, Roy hopes to get what he needs to eventually take Montague down without taking the rest of the City down with him.

Invoke: To use Montague’s status as an advantage.

Compel: Montague’s an old hand at this. He knows how to play this game and loves to move Roy around the board.

  • A CRASH COURSE IN THE PARANORMAL WE HAVE THE TOOLS, WE HAVE THE TALENT

Roy believes now in using every Resource that is available to him. That means the best guns, Gear and magic crap he and his allies can get their hands on. The Venatori Umbrorum are described as “Like the Masons with Machineguns/Flamethrowers” for a reason.

Invoke: To get or otherwise have The Tools or the Talent on hand to solve a problem.

An Invoke for Effect could be to ask a known quantity in the City like a Minor Talent or two for a favor.

Compel: Tools and Talents are obvious when they are in play usually. They send up red flags to the community. A Flamethrower’s nice but it can’t get through Airport security.

  • MY FAMILY IS MY ROCK

Roy married his Highschool sweetheart Vanessa, an Internet Security Consultant(She does Penetration Tests from home) and has 3 kids, Twins Michael and Megan(19) and Jonathon (16).

The Mullenix Family is a solid unit and the only stable thing in Roy’s life. They are the thing that keeps him going.

Invoke: His Family keeps him going in more ways than one.

Compel: Sisyphus had a Rock too…

Gain +2 to Alertness when using it to determine initiative.
  • HONEST LIES:
Whenever incorporating a real, valuable piece of the truth (however marginally valuable it may be) into a lie, you gain a +2 on your efforts to pass off the untrue parts.
  • PERSONAL ARSENAL:
You own a great number of weapons, and you get new ones all the time. Use your Guns skill instead of your Resources skill when dealing with weaponry.

  • ARMED ARTS:
You are practiced with a small number of weapons as part of your martial arts training. Pick two weapons which logically fit in with your training. You may use the Fists skill instead of Weapons when wielding these implements. Police Baton and Knife.
  • LET MY GUN DO THE TALKING:
Roy is skilled at making his skill with Firearms look intimidating. Roy can make Threats using his Gun Skill as long as he has a Firearm in plain view.
  • I WILL FIND OUT WHAT I WANT TO KNOW: There’s not much point being able to get information from a crime scene if you can’t get information from a person. Use your Investigation skill for the Interrogation trapping of Intimidation.

Bio

Phase I(Where did you come from?)

Born and raised in the Seattle area, Roy’s whole family are in areas of public service. Most of them are in Law Enforcement. The Mullenixes are characterized by their love of firearms, especially Roy’s father who was an outspoken Libertarian opponent of the 1994 Federal Weapons Ban. In Highschool Roy wasn’t thinking about becoming a cop, then he met Sid Routman at a career fair and everything changed.

Roy’s career was like watching the opening to Hot Fuzz: Tour in Army Special Forces(where he met Woof), Top of his class at the academy, Seattle S.W.A.T., high arrest record(though not absurdly so). Roy married his Highschool sweetheart Vanessa, an Internet Security Consultant(She does Penetration Tests from home) and has 3 kids, Twins Michael and Megan(19) and Jonathon (16). They have a house in Lower Queen Anne, his kids go to Seattle Waldorf High School. Roy’s first mark of distinction and brush with the Paranormal was at the 1999 WTO Riots, where he busted a fair number of perps using the Riot as cover. Since then he got awards and commendations and respect among the department. But what people didn’t know was that his career for years was one tale of weirdness after another. He kept getting weird cases and weirder SWAT situations but thought nothing of it.

Phase II

One day a few years ago, Roy helped raid what they thought was a massive drug deal, but in reality it turned out to be a meeting between The Vampire Courts and several other unsavory elements. Several officers went down, a few went comatose. Roy wanted to report what he saw, but he knew that they would just laugh at him. His friend Greg BigEagle convinced him to tell the truth, but leave the monster stuff out. Roy took the fall for it and his reputation disappeared. His family helped to get back to work and fight for his job….where he was parked at a desk for a while. On the brink of a breakdown, a man from the Venatori Umbrorum approached Roy. He told Roy the truth and offered him a chance to get his job back and fight monsters. Roy initially refused, he didn’t believe a word of it. Then John Youngblood II, a Member of the White Council used a ritual to revive the comatose officers back to consciousness.

Roy’s name got cleared(though his reputation was still dead in the water and it didn’t restore his rank) and became a member of the Venatori Umbrorum, The Hunters in the Shadows. They made up a story to justify his absence for Venatori Training. Roy came back with a vengeance and got back into the department’s good graces one case at a time. He learned the ins and out of bureaucracy and set the department record for most traffic tickets and citations written in a week, a month and a year.

Then Ronald Montgomery made Police Chief and assigned Roy to Special Investigations where he still is today. At least when Lord Montague killed his career, he gave Roy his old rank back. S.I. seems to be the place where Montague placed anyone in the department with any clue about the supernatural. This does does double duty of both utterly discrediting anyone clued-in at the Department and best utilizing those who are clued-in.

Roy’s Senior Partner, Jessi is unaware that the Supernatural actually exists, but is firm in her understanding of Lore(As in the skill). Albeit, most of her Lore skill is garbage connecting the Romans who killed Christ with John Wilkes Booth and the Kennedy Assassination.

Phase III Broken Shield

When a Retired Cop is murdered inside his own home by something from the spooky side, Roy must find the killer. But will he succeed when the Killer’s trail leads to a hired gun for the Vampire Courts?

Phase IV: Surprise Cadence

When Jason Durant ends up in Roy’s Car with a monster on his tail at just the right time, the unlikely pair have a little fun…

Phase V:(Also Guest Starring) Trick of The Light

When a string of grisly murders hits Seattle, Roy finds him self crossing path with the White Council yet again. But will a mischievous youth he’s busted in the past be his ally or ruin the investigation?
