Welcome, reader, to a tale of Darkest Heresy.
Follow the path, if you so choose, of Angelae Naraciss Cell [EXPUNGED], a group of Inquisitorial Acolytes in the employ of Inquisitor Globus Vaarak; in turn an agent of the supremely enigmatic Lord Inquisitor Archividus Hothan Narac, of the Ordo Malleus Solar. Witness as their very souls gutter and pale at the sights and truths of a vast and unforgiving universe. How much, and by what measure, will these mere mortals accomplish, before their essence is snuffed out forever?

*It is the 41st Millennium. For more than a hundred centuries the Emperor has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Earth. He is the Master of mankind by the will of the gods, and master of a million worlds by the might of his inexhaustible armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the Imperium for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day, so that he may never truly die.
Yet Even In his deathless state, the Emperor continues his eternal vigilance. Mighty battlefleets cross the daemon-infested miasma of the warp, the only route between distant stars, their way lit by the Astronomican, the psychic manifestation of the Emperor’s will. Vast armies give battle in his name on uncounted worlds. Greatest amongst his soldiers are the Adeptus Astartes, the Space Marines, bio-engineered super-warriors. Their comrades in arms are legion: the Imperial Guard and countless planetary defence forces, the ever vigilant <inquisition> and the tech-priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat from aliens, heretics, mutants – and worse.
To Be A man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruellest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be re-learned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim darkness of the far future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.*

Welcome, Ladies and Gentleman, to the realm of Fantasy Flight Games’ Warhammer 40.000 RPG: Dark Heresy. Think of the game as an ultra-futuristic, Sci-Fi version of Call of Cthulhu (For those who have tasted its sequestered delights.) In other words, your character attempts to stay alive, and sane, whilst flailing with reckless abandon and seeming aimlessness at the uncaring cosmos in general. And, invariably, fails. Oh, and you’re meant to be solving a mystery and/or investigation at the same time. It’s a lot of fun, honest! Trust me. There are big guns too. Oh yes. Lots of big guns.
The Basic Premise
In this Universe, player character’s assume the role of newly recruited Inquisitorial Acolytes. Hand-picked by agents of the awesomely powerful and notoriously secretive organisation know as the Inquisition, these ‘chosen’ men and women are selected for a stunning variety of skills and quirks of fate; but with one uniting cause: to be the first, last and sometimes only line of defence between the citizens of the Imperium of Mankind, and the horrors of the warp, the corruption of the heretic and the insanity of the alien. You are to be the supreme defenders of mankind, the emperor’s unwavering sentinels. And you’re not very good at your job yet… (Work experience was a ‘Nightmare’, and you STILL don’t know where the stationary-cupboard is – let alone the 3mm staples…) Prepare for Darkest Heresy, with these first few faltering steps…
A Note on the Rules, and the Flavour of the Game
The Core Rulebook is a MONSTER, and details a highly in-depth and complex game, with decades worth of background knowledge out there (It’s set in Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40’000 universe in case you didn’t yet know! Though far, far away from those nice clean tabletop battlefields…), and where knowledge of the rules, as well as an inquisitive and creative mind, is paramount – and often directly proportional to your character’s survival, success and your personal enjoyment of the game as a whole. For this reason, I would ask any player to have a good read of it, if at all possible, before considering diving in. It’s so much fun to read anyway, that you shouldn’t find this an unbearable burden. Dark Heresy uses a d100 percentile system (almost exactly the same as Warhammer Fantasy Role-play, and similar to Cthulhu in many ways.), so a little different to d20s and such, you only need two dice! Combat, when encountered, is swift, brutal and deadly. There are no power levels, no sure-run-things. No AC to hit or save to pass. Just bullets and blood. A lucky shot to the head or heart could be the ignominious end of an Acolyte’s career – even at the highest ranks of advancement. For this reason, I would not recommend this game to those who want nothing more than to monster-bash; nor those who expect their character to be nigh invincible, or even have hugely better-than-average survivability… the 41st Millennium doesn’t work that way. :) At times it’s almost Horror role-play…
But, for those of you who delight in complex plots, nigh life-like setting, characterisation and social, political and economic systems; great, grand, sweeping story arcs ranging from a sumpy underhive settlement or dingy deathworld hab-site all the way to the bright and gaudy Lord-Sector’s palaces on Scintilla – and the odd brutal brawl thrown in. For those who want to immerse themselves in the grim, dark and grimy far future of our species – in a time when so much has been lost and so much more has yet to be found. When feudal religion rules the masses and Byzantine bureaucracy dictates the lives and deaths of trillions. When acts of both boundless heroism and wicked evil go, unnoticed, in the endless void between the stars. For players who desire to out-wit, outmanoeuvre and THEN out-gun their foe. THIS, is the game for you. Your time. Your world – to explore, and attempt to understand…

Fantasy Flight Games: http://new.fantasyfli… The official marketing website. I would recommend the Core Rule Book to anyone wanting to play the game seriously – or silly-ly, however you like. (I understand it’s quite an investment :( Especially with all this D&D stuff out there too! But Fantasy have Slightly more scruples than WotC when it comes to rulebooks… :P It’s the equivalent of all three D&D CRBs rolled into one.). However I would also strongly recommend the Inquisitor’s Handbook. Too much in there character creation-wise, equipment-wise and backgound-wise to miss. T’is basically a PHB2, Adventurer’s Vault 1+2 and a Fluff book all in one! Meaty. There are now also many other supplements – all of them so far excellent – available from the site. (The Radical’s Handbook, Creatures Anathema, Discples of the Dark Gods, Dark heresy: Ascension; as well as the newly released Rogue Trader rpg, a host of ready-made adventures, and the eagerly awaited Deathwatch…)
