“T. Benbow?” called out the Seargent.

“Here!” came the reply from a swarthy, thickset young man two rows behind Vera.

“R. V. Comstock?” called out the Seargent.

Before Vera could answer, she heard a subdued snicker to her right. Gretchen Verdeen.

Swallowing the retort that was forming on her lips, Vera turned her attention back to the front of the room, “Here, Sir!” she said.

“How many times do I have to remind you not to call me Sir, Private Comstock?” yelled the Drill Instructor.

“Yes Seargent!” replied Vera, feeling like her face was on fire.

“Moving on, A. D. Crepsin?”

“Here!” came the reply…

…After class, in the hallway,

“Hey, R.V.!”

“You call me ‘RV’ one more time Gretchen, and I shit you not, you’ll be eating through a straw for months!” hissed Vera angrily at her classmate.

“Wouldn’t call you that if it weren’t for that huge trunk you’ve got R…” responded the other soldier, her words abruptly cut off as Vera launched herself at the larger brunette…
