Nathan Kennedy is a psychiatrist living in Boston, MA. Being a member of the wealthy Kennedy family has its perks, and Nathan has made good use of them. Graduating with his degree from Yale University, Nathan started his own practice tending to the upper-class residents of Nob Hill in northern Boston. The years have been good to Nathan and he still makes the claim that he never met a patient he couldn’t treat. That was until Wilfred O’Connor.
Wilfred was a twitchy, wiry man in his mid 30’s. He claimed to be the caretaker for a fairly old residence on the fringe of the city. He began working at the Macario estate after Mr. and Mrs. Macario became violently insane and their children taken in as wards of the state. He tries to spend as little time as possible in the house for fear that he will meet the same fate. Wilfred is having nightmares, no, night terrors of beings most unholy. They call out to him in his sleep in some infernal tongue, commanding him to serve them. Wilfred awakes screaming after each episode. To make matters worse, Wilfred is constantly on edge during his time in the house. He swears to hearing strange noises – scratching, banging, whispering – coming from the bedrooms on the upper floor and thinks he may be becoming unhinged.
After one week of daily sessions, Wilfred is not heard from again.
Nathan receives a telephone call from his brother-in-law Marcus, a private investigator, requesting his expertise on a case he is working. Nathan scribbles the address into his moleskine notebook, tightens his coat against the rain, and steps out into the night.
