Terath was born to a retired Sergeant of the Free Corps in Westhelm. His mother Rin died in childbirth, leaving him alone with his father. His father Khoren had retired as a hero, having served almost two decades, after losing an arm in a skirmish with Lumen outriders. Khoren was never completely able to let go of his desire to serve, and, while serving as an advisor to the local division of the Free Corps, began training Terath at age 12. Terath respected his father, and realized the value of the skills he was learning, but desired freedom. He would often sneak out after training sessions to explore the nearby wilderness. In the third year of training, Lumen finally broke through Wistron’s defenses, and overtook Westhelm. Terath’s father took over the evacuation of the women and children, but after running into a score of Lumen pillagers, he and the few able to bear weapons sacrificed themselves to give the others time to join up with reinforcements. Terath was devastated by his father’s death, and spent weeks wandering the wilderness. Eventually, Terath returned and sought out his aunt Morgiana, and her husband Gortog in the Talarian Empire. Gortog and Terath had always been very close, and had spent much time together while Gortog’s regiment was in Wistron aiding the Free Corps. Gortog served as the strong presence Terath needed to move pass his father’s death. He spent several months there, then decided to move to the Garic Federation and attend the martial colleges at Walsh. After two years of infiltration and combat training, Terath had had enough of the strict structure if the colleges and dropped out. He spent the next few months taking jobs from the various mercenary companies in the city, and quickly built up a reputation as a competant warrior and spy.
Terath was captured by the pirate Sha-hrazz the Cruel when the party’s ship was attacked on the river Volan. While the party continued down the river, he was taken to the slave markets in the city of Clostin. There he was purchased by the warlock, John Watson. Watson used Terath as a hostage to manipulate the party, but when he was forced to go on the run, he left Terath to die in captivity.
