First Strike
Allow me to introduce myself. I am Bartleby Bartholomew Bennigan “Buffalo” Buford, rogue extraordinaire. I am the the son of Baron Baxter Buford and Baroness Blanchefleur Buford, as well as rightful heir to their lavish fortune. My family is well respected as well, invited to all the balls and such.
Now, the question you’re asking is, “You brilliant brigadier, if you’re a baron-heir, what on Earth are you doing running around as a rogue?”
Well… it’s slightly complicated.
Even though I’m a baron-heir, that doesn’t necessarily mean I was rich. I got an allowance from my parents every month, only I never thought it was enough. So I did some… side work.
Now before you go all paladin on my ass, just listen to me! It wasn’t much! All I did was pick some pockets in the inn and the street… and the tavern… and in alleyways… and in people’s houses.
Actually, I only broke into one house, and that was for a silverware set. Brilliant stuff, monogrammed and everything. And before you ask, my family does have monogrammed silverware, it’s just that it’s a little old, and my family never remembered to polish it.
Anyways, one day I decided to try a scheme I thought up. As I was picking some adventurer’s pocket, I heard about how she got 100 gold from somebody for finding a pair of shears. So I thought, “If she can do it, why can’t I?” The only problem was that no one in my village lost anything, especially not a pair of shears. So I had to… “engineer” the conditions for a successful scheme.
Needless to say, it backfired and led to the worst feud in my village since Barry la Bete tried to marry his neighbor’s goat. I had to skip town so my name wouldn’t be incriminated.
I was sure I was going to return in a year or two, or whenever things died down. Only, now that I’ve actually left my village, I don’t want to return, not yet. I want to travel and sample all of the world’s special pockets.
I would say my goal for the moment is to make some money and do some traveling. The only thing I miss is my set of silverware. I love that silverware more than anything… except my parents, of course.
