The Ballad of Hal Whitewyrm

Chapter III: Idle Banter

I find interesting that in order to get the Aptitude tests you need to learn a new skill, you basically have to make easy tests. So far the ones I’ve done have tended to be towards the Difficult/Challenging end of the spectrum, which then count towards Stat improvement. But it’s kinda weird since making a Beginner’s Luck test always doubles the Ob, which means that unless you go around making Ob 1-2 test (doubled to 2-4), you’re not gonna get the Aptitude tests you need to learn. I wonder if that’s a feature or a strange glitch of the system.

Many of your rolls have been versus rolls with NPC’s, so the ob’s have been unusually high.

Ah, that’s what it is. Thanks. Little features of the system become apparent as we go along and I’m finding them fascinating. I am beginning to understand in more than a passing way what I have heard Luke say, that BW works like a well-oiled machine as long as you follow its rules to a T.

There are a few things we haven’t been doing. On versus rolls, I haven’t been stating what will happen if you fail a roll. I think this is because its been pretty clear to both of us but it could lead to a mis-communication, something to think about in the future.

So far, I have felt that Vs rolls have been very well defined on what will happen if they fail, at least from my end to let me have a good idea of whether I want to attempt them or not. My question about the Road-wise test is a good example where I wasn’t sure and you made it clear what the consequence would be. So yeah, we keep an eye on it, but I think we’re doing ok. The written medium means that things tend to get more explained than in speech thus making the situations more obvious.

I’m still trying to understand the artha awards. Does the last post qualify for a Persona artha (for Embodiment)?

We should really look over Mouldbreaker, Workhorse, and Embodiment at the end of each chapter.

So, for example, I’d say that you nailed Embodiment with the toast back in Chapter I and the speech over Brother Vhelt Marrim ’s grave. So, take 2 Persona for that.

I think you just delivered yourself into a powerful enemy’s hands, headed for another powerful enemy in order to reclaim a piece of your elven ancestry. I’d say you should take a Fate for that.

Right now, I wouldn’t say that what you’ve done is Embodiment. Its FUCKING GLORIOUSLY CRAZY! And I love it but let’s see how it pans out and why before we go any farther.

I wouldn’t go looking for Embodiment so much but never be afraid to ask and we’ll decide together. What you are doing now feels more like Mouldbreaker type stuff than Embodiment but let’s see how it pans out.

Once you are done reading BWG, it might be time to pick up the Adventure Burner. I think that reading that while playing this game will be pretty damned rewarding.

So, 2 Persona, 1 Fate and a reminder for both of us to go over Embodiment, Mouldbreaker, Workhorse and MVP at the end of each chapter.

I was thinking of ordering Adventure Burner, and with this recommendation I certainly will.

I’ve noted the artha. Slowly getting a hang of things!

FUCKING GLORIOUSLY CRAZY!

Yeah, that’s a way of putting it. :-)

Dude, you are ruining every other GM for me out there solely on your descriptive text.

Also, that’s twice that you have had me slackjawed as I read along. Excellently done.

That is very kind to say, Daniel.

This has really re-kindled my love of writing. This is two days in a row of waking up and writing 1000 words before the sun comes up and shit get’s busy.
