The Selkie are descended from seal like carnivores that live a good percentage of the time on and below the polar ice caps of Ours Heros home world. Because of the intense competition the species developed elaborate politeness rituals to keep from attacking each other. Most people assume that the Selkie are the most polite race they have ever encountered. But the carnivore resides very close, just under the surface.
The Selkie move with restrained and practiced grace even on land. Looking like they are slideing over the ground rather than flopping. They will bow and seem polite if nosy to strangers. But they can take offense VERY easily and have long memories. In fact the Selkie live to 400 or 500 years old and are repositories of great wisdom.
In water the move with ballet like grace and incredible speed and stamina. When fighting they have distinct martial arts and fight with blinding speed ( 4 spd base) They can endure arctic cold and dive to the deepest depths without ill effect. And they can eat literally anything organic with no ill effect. As such Selkie are notoriously poor cooks.
One very unique feature of the Selkie is the ability to take the form of another (mammilian and roughly humanoid)species. This takes consuming something that had the races genetic structure ( Even hair or poop will work for this) and then, over the course of a month, gradually sheding there outer form in favor of the new races form. Likewise it takes a full month to change back. In the new races form the Selkie loses it’s resistance to cold and most likly it long range swimming skill. But it will look enough like the new species to be able to pass undetected. During the “Great War” the Selkie used this ability to great effect. And incidentally caused the internment of a great many Selkie that were completely loyal to Our Heros cause.
While in the form of a new species the Selkie is fully capable of interbreeding. Often the child of such a union has the abilities of a Selkie as well.
