The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and go, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. In one such age, called the Third Age by some, an Age long forgotten, an Age yet to come, a wind rose on the Caralain Grass. Eastward it blew, across scattered plains and hills, passing battlefields scarred long ago when Trolloc and Mankind met for the first time in what would later come to be known as the Trolloc Wars. From scarred battlefield to burned out village, the wind continued to blow eastward, blowing and blowing until finally churning up snow on the freshly blooded battlefields near White Peak, on the outskirts of Kinslayers Dagger. A war was raging across the Westlands, and this was but one part of it.
Already, the Trolloc Wars have raged for nearly 300 years. Initially lead by a host of Dreadlords, Trollocs poured out of the Blight in numbers unheard of since the Age of Legends. Wars have been fought constantly over the last 300 years, sometimes stretching two or three years in between a lull in the fighting, other times going as much as fifty or more. The Stone of Tear has been laid siege to three times thus far, and Tar Valon, the center of Aes Sedai power, has been assaulted three times as well. It’s become increasingly obvious that The Compact of Ten Nations, a coalition created to deal with the threat of the Shadow, won’t last much longer. No country controls the same amount of land it controlled prior to the start of the Wars, and some no longer exist at all.
The last century saw Manetheren, The Sword that cannot be Broken, the Thorn in the Dark One’s Side and the Bramble to his Hand, destroyed. Aridhol, a close ally to Manetheren, fell shortly afterward to it’s own internal evil. An evil independent of the Shadow. Aramelle fell long before either Manetheren or Aridhol, and has been largely forgotten since no part of Aramelle has ever been retaken.
Now, Coramanda and Almoren stand on their last legs. Jaramide was invaded before the winter snows slowed the fighting. The countries of Aelgar, Essenia, Eharon, and Safer still stand, but each nation is severely weakened and the compact of Ten Nations has become fractured. Each nation still stands by their oath to aid the others, but fissures are showing in the foundation which has held it together for so long. Some whisper the compact may break soon, and if it does, mankind is doomed. It is a desperate time, a time that threatens the balance of the Wheel of Time itself. The Wheel needs to weave out new heroes if the tides of the Trolloc Wars are ever to change.
But the Stone still stands.
The Flame of Tar Valon still burns.
The Wheel of Time still turns.
Prepare to be woven into the Pattern of the Ages.
