Born in Mercantium as Amado Acero-Espada, lived there with his mother and father. His father worked as one of the top blacksmiths in the forge there. The owner had a secret way that he devised to make the steel for their items many times stronger than common everyday steel. By age 7 his father started teaching Amado to fight with swords and daggers. St age 10 Amado had started to digress towards getting into fights with the other boys in the city. He was victorious more times than not and soon earned the nickname Diego for his wrongdoings. His family disapproved of his actions and were soon forced to leave the city. Diego, at age 12, set out with his family for Saltmarsh traveling by themselves. Their wagon was attacked by assassins sent out by his fathers former employer who’s policy was to never let his company secret out farther than he could see. Diego’s father, knowing this secret, was not permitted to leave the city or else his time would be terminated. Diego’s father had known that this may happen and kept it a secret from his family. During the ensuing battle Diego was the only one left alive. Standing on the body of a dying assassin, blood dripping from his fathers dagger he vowed to kill the man that had sent these monsters after his family.
After looting all the body’s and grabbing a sack of supplies from the wagon the young boy set out with his fathers sword for Saltmarsh. Out of supplies and forced to thievery to get by Diego started stealing from nearby travelers. He came upon a caravan of people and learned by listening into their conversations that they were headed to Saltmarsh. Seeing this as a opportunity to hitch a ride rather than steal Diego fashioned himself a harness out of rope and wood that he attached to the underside of one of the wagons and hid in for the night. Come morning the caravan set out for Skara Brae and arrived there by night the same day. That night Diego slipped out and found some shelter behind the inn. Dinner was served via the remnant food discarded by the maids. It wasn’t the best meal he had had but it was food and that was all that mattered. Using the name Diego he searched for a place to stay and that is when he met Casp Avertin who, at the time, was trying to become Mayor of Saltmarsh and he took Diego in. Diego earned his keep by cleaning the house and running errands for Casp and the other townsfolk. Some errands sent him out to the wilderness where he encountered numerous monsters. He took it to himself to study the monsters and how they fought. Once he encountered a Crab Spider and was surprised when he fell gravely ill after fighting it. Upon his recovery Diego returned to the body of the Crab Spider to examine it further and found that the legs of this creature were coated with a mild poison. This continued until Diego turned 15 at which time Casp was elected Mayor and appointed Diego as his personal bodyguard.
Diego served as Casp’s bodyguard for 7 years when a group of adventurers arrived and grudgingly Diego was sent with them to Modnar’s tower to fetch some thing for Casp. Diego did not pay attention to what it was that the buffoon wanted and he didn’t much care. After making their way to the tower Diego was faced in the depths of the tower with many supernatural things. The group spent the night there and early the next morning Diego slipped away and back to Casp reporting thar he did not get paid well enough for work like that. Diego was shortly thereafter relieved of duty by Casp as his paranoia got the better of him.
Diego was left once again wandering the world alone. He ran into a odd bunch of adventurers in a field one day and decided to join them. They were on a quest to find some stone of some kind, something to do with love or some other nonsense, and they looked like they needed some help.
