Born simply Kazoola, he was a Fon child raised Vodun in and around Takon, Dahomey (Modern day Benin). Immersed in warrior culture from a young age, he grew up to be a decent soldier. His forbidden love with one of the Amazons was not to be. They were both charged with sacrilege and made into slaves. Shortly after they endured the long voyage aboard the Clotilde to a place called Mobile, Alabama.
They were mostly left to fend for themselves in the swamps nearby. The night after the Battle of Mobile Bay, one Union squad of ne’er-do-wells came and did unspeakable things to Kazoola and his kin. Like the others he was presumed dead, but he was the only one left. A year passed as he was nursed back to health…
