Joe is decent height but has gotten a little round in his later years but still in decent shape. Always seen in his old cowboy hat but varies between his police uniform and casual western wear depending on if he’s on duty or not.

Character Notes
4 Truths & 1 Lie:
- Joe’s marriage is fairly rocky because his wife doesn’t understand why he’s so supportive of his brother.
- Joe was the youngest and was clearly the favored child by his parents, leading to Frankie’s fall from grace.
- Joe has done some unlawful things in order to keep his family out of trouble, especially when it comes to his older brother.
- Joe is an extremely religious man, he attends church every Sunday and refuses to work on the Sabbath.
- Joe was close friends with his country sheriff, which is how he became a police officer after his farm foreclosed.
The below is stuff I want submitted in secret, do not post this on your character page or share this with the other players
Secret GM Info
Conceptualization:
Joe Roberts grew up on and took over the family farm before crop prices fell and he took work as a local police officer. He is extremely close to his family and would never do anything to jeopardize their well being. He’s trying his best to serve his community by being a police officer while keeping a steady income to support his family, it also gives his the added perk of being able to help keep his family safe. (Inspired by the song Highway Patrolman by Bruce Springsteen, although I like the Johnny Cash version much more. Lyrics below.)
- Youth:
Born 40 years ago in a small town in Michigan called Perenville. His family owned a small farm that he and his brother grew up on. Joe was the straight laced one, good in school, lots of close friends, and always helping out with the family farm. Some of his friendships lasted from grade school up until now, thats just the way it goes in small towns. - Family:
Joe’s mother and father died years ago, but he still has a younger brother, Frankie. Joe’s also married to a nice Hispanic woman named Maria that he was high-school sweethearts with but they don’t have any children. Joe was very close to his family and still visits their graves on their anniversary. - School:
Joe went to a small local school and was always well liked. He did well in school but never went to college. Instead, Joe got married and a farm deferment to try to keep the old family farm going. - Friends:
Joe has lots of long-term friends, but few in Miami. The exception would be his police chief, whom he went to grade school with. Joe’s a warm and friendly kinda guy, quick to smile and turn the other cheek. He is married, as previously mentioned. - Life:
After school, Joe started running the family farm instead of going to college. Up until the farm became unprofitable he was fairly happy. It was when the farm when under when he got the job offer in Miami and the troubles began. He currently lives south of Miami and works downtown. He’s only been a cop for a few years and in that time he’s only shot one man, but the man wasn’t killed. - Loyalty:
Joe started with the Miami police force three years ago. It was hard at first since Joe didn’t have any real experience with law enforcement. If it wasn’t for the support of the chief of police, he would have been run out a while ago. This has lead to various personal issues with other offices. The only bond that keeps them from together is the sense of duty to the community. - Motivation:
Joe is just trying to get by any more. With a failing marriage, a difficult work environment, and a troubled brother, Joe just tryings to walk the line and make it day to day. He misses the simple days back on the family farm.
Background:
Highway Patrolman by Bruce Springsteen
My name is Joe Roberts I work for the State
I’m a sergeant out on Perenville barracks No 8
I’ve always done an honest job honest as I could
Got a brother named Frankie Frankie ain’t no good
Ever since we were young kids it’s been the same come down
I’d get a call on the short wave Frankie’s in trouble downtown
But if it was any other man I’d put him straight away
But sometimes when it’s your brother you look the other way
Yeah me and Frankie laughin’ and drinkin’ nothin’ feels better than blood on blood
Takin’ turns dancin’ with Maria
While the band played The Night Of The Johnstown Flood
I catch him when he’s strayin’ like any brother should
Man turns his back on his family he ain’t no good
Well Frankie went into the army back in 1965
I got a farm deferment settled down took Maria for my wife
But them wheat prices kept on droppin’ till it was like we’s gettin’ robbed
Frankie came home in ‘68 and me I took this job
Yeah me and Frankie laughin’ and drinkin’ nothin’ feels better than blood on blood
Takin’ turns dancin’ with Maria
While the band played The Night Of The Johnstown Flood
I catch him when he’s strayin’ teach him how to walk that line
Man turns his back on his family ain’t no friend of mine
The night was like any other I got a call bout the quarter of nine
There was trouble at a roadhouse out on the Michigan line
There was a kid on the floor lookin’ bad bleedin’ hard from his head
There was a girl cryin’ at a table it was Frankie she said
I ran out and I jumped in my car then I hit the lights
I must have done about a hundred and ten to Michigan County that night
It was down by the crossroads out bout willow bank
Seen the buick with Ohio plates behind the wheel was Frank
Well I chased him through them county roads
Till the sign said Canadian border five miles from here
Pulled over the side of the highway ´nd watched his taillights disappeared
Yeah me and Frankie laughin’ and drinkin’ nothin’ feels better than blood on blood
Takin’ turns dancin’ with Maria
While the band played The Night Of The Johnstown Flood
I catch him when he’s strayin’ like any brother should
Man turns his back on his family ain’t no good
Plot Points:
Joe’s brother (Frankie) is always getting in trouble with the law, anything from bar room brawls to small time hustles. He’s never done anything serious but Joe always tries to make it to the scene before any other officers in order to help Frankie stay out of trouble. That’s not to say Joe hasn’t thrown Frankie in the drunk tank from time to time, but in general, Joe tries to save Frankie’s bacon.
Joe’s wife (Maria) is on the verge of leaving him. She’s recently sworn that if Joe does anything illegal to help Frankie again, she’s going to take the kids and leave town. This isn’t the first time she’s threatened this but every time her determination becomes more resolute.
The country sheriff knows about Joe’s pull to keep Frankie out of trouble. He hasn’t said anything yet because Frankie hasn’t done anything to serious and he is good friends with Joe. But, he keeps a constant eye on Joe and Frankie none the less and will bust Joe down if he catches him covering up anything too serious.
Joe tries his best to maintain an appearance of being a happy, god-fearing, family man but the truth is his faith has lapsed. He doesn’t attend church as regularly as he once did, he’s worked shifts on the sabbath from time to time, and just in general he’s starting to fail as member of his church. His pastor has noticed this and has been debating talking to Joe about his troubles, but he’s not sure if its really his place.
Joe was recently approached by Viktor Romeninski while on duty. Viktor Romeninski asked Joe to look the other way for a few days in exchange for some assistance looking out for Frankie. Joe accepted the deal and has regretted it ever since. Frankie’s been hanging out with some known associates of Viktor Romeninski and Joe fears Frankie might be getting into a life of more serious crimes.
