Bio
Born Haltrin Aletlar of house Kenafin, a lesser house, my parents were one of the few people to have a Rothé farm just outside of Sshamath, and a small shop inside the Dark Weavings Bazaar selling general goods and products from the farm. My early childhood was not abnormal as Drow go, spending most of my days dreaming of ways that my elder brother could have an “accident”, thus leaving me the shop and farm, while at the same time avoiding my younger brothers. I quickly found that while my brothers were all stronger than me I was by far the most agile compared to my siblings.
Time passed for a while on the farm with things in a relative stalemate mainly because my brothers usually couldn’t find me to beat up on. Then one day a stranger came over and talked to my parents for a while before they motioned for me to join them. My mother beckoned me to face her and as I did I glimpsed my father out of the corner of my eye step up and whack the back of my head with a sap and I fell into darkness. I awoke on a wagon traveling through one the Underdark’s many caverns with the stranger my parents were talking to, and a new collar around my neck. My new companion quickly explained that he was taking me to meet my new owner. Apparently my parents decided to grow their farming operations and expand into the next farm over. Unfortunately, it was owned by a member of House M’elzaraep, a greater noble house in nearby Sshamath. The price for my family was a large sum of gold, and one of their children to be given as an indentured “servant”.
It was a price my parents were more than willing to pay as they had 5 children and I was, in their opinion, the least suited to farm life and thus least useful to them. So the stranger led me to an empty cavern, where out of the shadows materialized a man dressed in strange clothing style wrapped around his body and head (what I would later find out was traditional Ninja garb) holding a bag. The stranger bowed to the Ninja and accepting the bag went back to his cart and sent off.
My new master signaled for me to follow him, and started walking away with mentioning a word. Since I had no idea where I was, I had no choice but to follow. We journeyed for what seemed like hours, until my master led me down into a small ravine. He gestured some arcane symbols, revealing a secret door in the wall. He pointed into it, and I slowly entered his abode.
I spent well over a year just, repeatedly, and monotonously cleaning my new master’s house, without ever being allowed to leave it. Sometimes my master would go away for a few days at a time, and once I decided to seize the initiative, and tried going outside while he was gone, even for just a minutes, but somehow he knew I had, and when he retuned, the beating I received was more than enough incentive to never try again. It did however resolve me to teach myself how to become better at fighting, but to do that I needed spare time. So I had to work twice as hard just to make some time for myself, to start practicing fighting. I had seen it so often coming at me how hard could it be.
It was in the middle of one of these training sessions that I noticed that my master had been watching me. I don’t know for how long he had been there, one minute I was alone and then I was aware I was being watched. I stopped what I was doing immediately and asked for his forgiveness. To my surprise he motioned for me to continue, so I finished my practice. The next day my master came in after his middle meal, and ordered me to finish cleaning later, for today I was to start my training. As I began, he instructed me on the right way of doing it, and it was then that the real training began.
First, I had to unlearn everything I had thought I learned. We did basic maneuvers and drills, over and over until it became second nature. Then the training focus moved onto stealth – using the Underdark, and its shadows to move from place to place without being detected. We used dummies and bodies to explain basic anatomy, where to hit a person for maximum result or a particular effect.
If we were not training on physical aspects, we were training on other skills. I studied the Arts of Deception to learn how to fit in different places, like that of noble houses. I learned alchemy and poisons – when best to be used and in what different situations.
It was while we were here that I learned of my master’s arrangement with the ruling council of mages of Sshamath. Their guilds and associates listened to the whispers of what was happening in the city, and who was having problems with who and then decided which ones would benefit the city more if they were to simply be removed and passed them on to master Zalatein.
During my instruction at the town house, master Zalatein was approached twice with contracts, and for the first time I witness near perfection in action, but always as an observer, remaining hidden at all times. There was no wasted motion is his actions, and the thrill of the hunt was beyond words, beyond explanation. I knew then at that moment, that I was on the right path and nothing would stop me from mastering the art to perfection.
I wanted to learn everything that I could right then and my master could plainly see the zeal in my eyes, so he named me An’tafein (Deadly Executioner) and took me on as his acolyte, to become a true be ninja
